Description

Hebe pimeleoides 'Quicksilver' is a small, evergreen and hardy bush. Its small silvery leaves, carried by erect stems of an intense purple colour, form an ensemble of great elegance. It is ideally suited as ground cover, in borders, rockeries or even in pots.

Hebe pimeleoides 'Quicksilver' has a dense and spreading habit. Its stems are erect. This bush can reach a height of 45 cm (18 in) and a spread of 90 cm (35 in) at maturity. Its leaves are greenish-grey to silvery and have an almost round ovate shape, adorning intense violet stems. This little Veronica is very interesting for the contrast between its foliage and the colour of its stems. In summer, during the months of June and July, it displays blue-violet flowers arranged in spikes.

It will suit partial shade or full sun. Hebe pimeleoides 'Quicksilver' likes rich or poor, moist, well-drained and neutral to acidic soils. It is resistant to drought.

This Hebe bush will be ideal as a ground cover with cotoneasters or ceanothus, or even in the front of shrub borders alongside e.g. sea buckthorn, forsythia, and elderberry. Growing it in a pot is also possible.

Planting and care

In gardens with a wet climate, Hebes should be reserved for rockeries, gravel gardens or sloping banks. It enjoys a rich soil that is always well-drained. In the colder regions of Northern Europe it is necessary to protect these shrubs during winter or cultivate them in pots, bringing them indoors during periods of freezing weather. Avoid pruning this Shrubby Veronica; however it is advisable to clean the Hebe of faded blooms once flowering is over. Remove any dead branches to preserve its compact habit.
