Description

Lonicera caerulea var. kamtschatica is a variety of edible honeysuckle, producing cylindrical blue berries with a white bloom from May onwards. They have a tangy taste similar to blueberries and kiwi, and can be consumed fresh or used in jams, jellies, and juices. This is a hardy bush. Plant in autumn or spring for a harvest in May and June.

Lonicera kamtschatica is a bushy shrub reaching a height of 1 m to 1.5 m (3.3 ft to 4.9 ft) and a width of 1 m (3.3 ft). This shrub, native to Siberia, is very hardy and can withstand temperatures as low as -40° C (-40° F). It belongs to the Caprifoliaceae family and the Lonicera species, like honeysuckle. Its deciduous leaves are ovate and elongated.

Flowering occurs as early as March, with small white flowers that later transform into small blue fruits around May. These berries are covered with a white bloom and have an elongated shape, measuring approximately 2 cm (0.8 in) in length and 0.5 cm (0.2 in) in diameter. They have a tangy taste similar to blueberries and kiwi. Rich in vitamins B and C, they can be consumed fresh, used in jams, jellies, juices, or frozen. When cooked, the flesh turns into a mahogany red colour.

In the garden, Lonicera kamtschatica can be grown as a hedge or in flower beds. It prefers moist soil but is not suited to dry or chalky soils. To ensure good pollination and fruiting, it is recommended to plant at least two bushes.

Planting and care

It prefers moist, well-drained soils and dreads dry and very chalky soils. Choose a sunny or semi-shaded exposure in warm regions. Plant in autumn or spring. Space the plants about 60 cm to 1 m (23.6 in to 3.3 ft) apart.

Soak the root ball for a few moments before planting. Add mud made of water and compost at the bottom of the planting hole. Install the young plant, cover with soil and firm the soil to form a small watering basin. Water.

During the summer, apply a layer of mulch at the base to preserve freshness and moisture.

In case of aphid attack, spray with black soap.

Cultivation in a pot is possible.
