Description

Itea ilicifolia is a evergreen bush, similar to holly but not prickly, with astonishing loose spike-like flowers over 30cm (11.8in) long.

A bush with a loose and erect habit, Itea ilicifolia is slow growing: it quickly reaches a height of 1.50m (4ft 11in) and then slows down its growth; with age, it can reach a height of 2 to 2.50m (6ft 7in to 8ft 2in).

Its evergreen leaves are similar in appearance to holly leaves, with a toothed (non-prickly) edge and glossy, dark green colour.

In late summer, the bush produces very long, delicately scented cream-yellow spikes, over 30cm (11.8in) long. It requires an acidic soil.

Hardy, it appreciates a rich, humus-rich, and well-draining soil. It can be planted in partial shade or in full sun, protected from cold and dry winds. Place it against a hedge, along a wall, or in a pot on a sheltered terrace.
