3 sad-looking plants with broken branches. But they have survived the summer well and today they are flowering. I am delighted.

Description

The  Viburnum tinus 'Spirit' is a very early variety of laurel, floweing from the end of November. The inflorescences offer a beautiful range of colours, from bright pink to pure white, a bit of colour in the heart of winter.

Viburnum tinus is a local species native to the entire Mediterranean region, it belongs to the caprifoliaceae family. The 'Spirit' variety from this species forms a small, compact bush, with a round habit,  2 to 2.50m (6.6ft) in size with long-lasting flowering which starts in November, its coloured flower buds open into perfect white umbels in March; a particularly appreciated touch of colour in this season. The flowers will give way to small black berries that attract birds.

The evergreen foliage of this bush will clothe hedges where have planted it. Hardy and perfectly adapted to many growing conditions, you can also keep it in a container or use it as a standalone plant in a small garden. At the base, consider planting some spring bulbs that will take over from the winter flowering while waiting for the more spring-like bushes to wake up.

Planting and care

Plant Viburnum tinus 'Spirit' in isolation or as a natural hedge preferably in full sun or light shade. It is not very demanding in terms of soil type and tolerates chalk. Just make sure it has good drainage, as stagnant and waterlogged soils are its only enemies. Prune it after flowering, it tolerates severe pruning well, but you can maintain its natural, elegant habit, with light pruning. In particularly harsh climates, it may be useful to mulch it during extreme cold spells.
