Description

Viburnum tinus Variegatum is a variety of variegated laurustinus whose dense foliage, of a very pretty green, has wide margins of creamy yellow. This contrast offers a little touch of light in all seasons on this evergreen shrub.

This bush is very decorative and is hardy down to -15°C (5 °F).  It should not be planted in open ground in northern Europe and should be stored e.g. in a veranda during winter. Its habit is naturally rounded, however it tolerates pruning very well and allows itself to be shaped by the gardener. The winter flowering is charming but overshadowed by the splendour of the foliage; in spring the birds feast on its black fruits.

Laurustinus are good candidates for cultivation in containers or large pots, and are also suitable for the creation of formal or informal hedges. They withstand any type of soil if they benefit from good drainage. A suffocating and sodden soil will damage the foliage and weaken the bush.

Planting and care

Plant Viburnum tinus Variegatum preferably in sun or light shade. It is not very demanding when it comes to soil type; it tolerates limestone very well. Simply ensure that it benefits from good drainage as heavy and waterlogged soils are its only enemy. Depending on the climate of your region, you will have to store it before the severe cold or plan to mulch it, at least in the first year.
