Leucothoe axillaris Curly Red

The Leucothoe axillaris 'Curly Red' or Leucothoë walteri 'Curly Red' is a small, semi-evergreen bush with highly contrasting foliage, initially purple-red during the bud burst period and then dark green. It will dress up the shaded areas of your garden.

At maturity, the Leucothoe axillaris 'Curly Red' has a spreading habit and can reach a height of 50 to 80cm (31.5in) (19.7 - 31.5in) with a spread of 80cm (31.5in) to 1.20m (3.3ft). In spring, it has curled, purple-red foliage that turns dark green. The leaves are glossy, shiny, and measure 5-6cm (2 - 2.4in) in length. This variety will have a discreet flowering period in April and May, with small white bell-shaped flowers. During winter, its semi-evergreen foliage subtly dresses up semi-shaded to shaded areas, with a purple hue, bringing a touch of Japanese style to the garden.

A hardy bush, the 'Curly Red' Leucothoe likes acidic, moist, and nutrient-rich soil that is well-drained. It can be planted alongside medium-sized perennials, at the edge of a shrub bed, or even as a standalone plant.
