Beautiful pruning upon receipt, however, when the leaves have grown, only on the upper third of the branches and no development of new branches during spring and summer. I hope I won't have to prune it severely (what's the point of buying a plant of a certain size if we have to trim it down?)

Description

Ligustrum japonicum, known as Japanese privet, is a compact, fast-growing bush with dark green evergreen leaves. It is a common choice for hedges.

Originating from Japan, this 6.6 - 9.8 ft tall, upright, compact bush is a classic choice for evergreen hedges. The 5 to 10cm long, opposite, entire, ovate leaves are dark green, slightly pointed, and shiny. The young leaves are coppery red, contrasting nicely with the older foliage. In July, fragrant white flowers in paniculate inflorescences measuring 8 to 15cm (3.1 - 5.9 in) long bloom, followed by black berries, if not pruned. Caution: All parts of the privet are toxic if ingested.

The hardy Ligustrum japonicum thrives in any good garden soil, even in chalky soil, in a sunny or partly shaded position. When used as a hedge, it is recommended to prune the new shoots by half each year to avoid thinning at the base. Mulch during the first summer to maintain soil moisture. Ligustrum japonicum is ideal for hedges, of course, but also for topiary. It is best paired with other flowering bushes.

A little history: After the severe winter of 2012, the Japanese privet hedges lost most of their leaves as a protective measure. However, in the spring season, they all regrew from the base of the old branches, returning to their beautiful and compact shape. The hedges have now become a favourite spot for nesting birds.

Planting and care

To plant a Ligustrum japonicum, choose either spring or autumn and space them 80cm (31.5 inches) apart for hedges. Make a hole twice and a half the size of the pot, loosen the bottom, and add a large handful of horticultural compost or mix slow-release fertiliser with the soil. Water it well, particularly during the first summers, and mulch the soil to maintain its coolness. To promote new growth, prune the shoots by half. After that, prune the new shoots by half yearly to encourage branching in your hedge. Although privets are fairly resistant to pests and diseases, they can be affected by weevil larvae or caterpillars.
