A new type of mahonia to add to our collection. Very nice young plant, well developed, which bravely withstood the gusts of 100km/h that hit our region yesterday. No worries about its growth if we consider our previous 6 necks, all resulting from flower promises.

Description

The Mahonia nitens Cabaret is a small bush that has the particularity of blooming not yellow like most of its cousins, but orange from the end of summer until autumn.

From August to November, elongated clusters of numerous coppery orange flowers emerge. They turn yellow-orange as they bloom.

The flowers are followed by black-blue berries. The foliage of the Mahonia is evergreen. The leaves are spiny and resemble those of holly. They are green in colour and turn purple in winter.

It is a hardy species. The Mahonia Cabaret can reach up to 1.5 m (5ft) in height. It can be cultivated in flower beds, low hedges, and as a standalone plant.

Planting and care

The Mahonia Cabaret thrives in shade or partial shade. It tolerates the sun only if the soil is not too dry. Plant it in ordinary, light, moist, but well-drained soil. It is tolerant of soil composition, preferring it to be slightly acidic but also accepting slightly limestone soil. It is averse to excessive water, and therefore requires good drainage: about twenty centimetres deep at the bottom of the planting hole. Add compost to the garden soil, and possibly some sand. It is easy to cultivate. After flowering, perform light pruning by removing branches that compromise the symmetry of the bush.
