A beautiful improvement of the famous dwarf sacred bamboo Fire Power. Compact and bushy, this little evergreen bush retains its young red leaves throughout the season, forming a beautiful contrast with older leaves, green tinged with gold. It is easy to grow in ordinary soil, drought-resistant and decorative all year round.

Description

The Nandina domestica Blush Pink is a variety of sacred bamboo that is interesting for its remarkably red young foliage all year round, even more decorative than that of its parent, Nandina Fire Power. It is a small evergreen bush that is very easy to care for, beautifully rounded, compact, and dense, remaining attractive even in winter without requiring any maintenance. It will be perfect in small gardens, in rockeries, large borders, flower beds, or even in pots on the terrace or balcony.

The Nandina domestica belongs to the family berberidaceae. This variety 'Blush Pink' was selected in Texas in 2004 by Magnolia Gardens Nursery, based on the Nandina domestica 'Fire Power', which also has a very compact habit and changing foliage. The growth of this small bush is slow, and its adult size will not exceed 70-80 cm (27.6-31.5 in) in all directions after many years. Wider than it is tall, this plant forms a beautiful spread-out and dense mass, supported by short stems reminiscent of bamboo. It is beautiful all year round; its bright red young shoots then produce undulating leaflets that gradually turn green tinged with yellow, and again become dark red in autumn. On this bush, red, caramel, copper, more or less green, and dark red leaves coexist throughout the year. In June-July, it produces small conical clusters of cream-white flowers. These are followed by the formation of clusters of shiny red fruits, which are very decorative, if the summer is long and warm enough. They persist for a long time on the branches, creating a joyful scene in the winter light.

The Nandina domestica Blush Pink is particularly admirable in large plantings, along a pathway, or to dress the base of shrubs or trees with light foliage. It can be associated with dwarf spireas (Spiraea japonica 'Little Princess'), Physocarpus with colourful foliage (Little Devil, Amber Jubilee, Dart's Gold), euphorbia griffithii 'Fire Glow', or even a dwarf berberis Bagatelle. Each of these scenes will be a success. This small bush will also be magnificent in a large pot on the terrace, in a non-burning exposure, and with regular watering. Its naturally spherical shape allows it to integrate advantageously into a topiary garden, adding a touch of warm colours. And thanks to its small size, it can also be used alone in the structuring of small gardens in pots or in the ground.

Planting and care

Plant the Blush Pink Sacred Bamboo in soft, deep, well-drained soil, even slightly chalky, moderately dry to moist. Once well established, it will completely do without watering in summer in all our regions. It prefers sunny, non-burning situations, or partial shade. Avoid drying winds and reserve a sheltered location from severe cold. This bush is hardy up to -15 °C under optimal conditions, so it will be useful to protect its base with a thick layer of dead leaves before winter in the coldest regions. If the above-ground part were to freeze, prune the plant to ground level in February-March. Pruning is limited to removing dead wood and excessive or weak branches in winter.
