Description

Nandina domestica Red Light 'NRL2015' is a dwarf variety of sacred bamboo that stands out with its delicately variegated foliage, its compact ball-shaped habit, and its brightly coloured young shoots. Its mature leaves are bluish-green, randomly speckled and streaked with cream-white throughout the season. Well-suited for small spaces and for ornamenting terraces, this extremely decorative bush is easily grown in ordinary garden soil, even if very dry in summer

Nandina domestica Red Light 'NRL2015' belongs to the Berberidaceae family. The growth of this small bush is slow and its size will not exceed 60cm (24in) in height and 50 to 60 cm (20 to 24in) in width after many years. Slightly taller than wide, this plant forms a small rounded mass, supported by short stems reminiscent of bamboo. It is beautiful year-round with its variegated evergreen foliage. This variety blooms infrequently and rarely produces fruits. When it does show, the flowering occurs from June to August and takes the form of upright panicles adorned with small white flowers, sometimes followed by red berries. The leaves are divided into lanceolate leaflets. The root of this plant is a root stock that can produce suckers, allowing it to spread somewhat in width.

Nandina domestica Red Light 'NRL2015' is particularly ornamental in large plantings, along a path, or to dress the base of shrubs or trees with light foliage. It can be paired with dwarf spireas (Spiraea japonica 'Little Princess'), colourful Physocarpus ('Little Devil', 'Amber Jubilee', Dart's Gold), dwarf abelias, Compact Winged Euonymus, or dwarf berberis 'Bagatelle'. Each of these scenes will be a success. This small bush will also be magnificent in a large pot on a terrace, in a non-burning exposure, and by following watering routines.

Planting and care

Plant in soft, deep, even slightly chalky, moist but well-drained soil, that can be dry in summer. Once well established, it will not require any watering in summer. It prefers sunny positions in cooler regions, but not scorching. Partial shade is recommended in hotter, sunnier climates. Avoid drying winds and provide a location sheltered away from severe cold. This bush is hardy to -18 °C (-0.4°F) under optimal conditions, so it will be wise to protect its base with a thick layer of dead leaves before winter in the coldest regions. If the above-ground part were to freeze, prune the plant to ground level in February-March. Pruning is limited to removing dead wood and excess or weak branches in winter.
