Incredible paulownia! Received in spring 2024 as a "branch" resembling a 1m long stake, it now measures almost 6m and is about to produce its first flowering in a few days, sublime!

Description

The Paulownia fortunei Fast Blue is a beautiful tree with very fast growth. Under good conditions (rich and moist soil in summer), it can grow more than 2 meters (6 inches 7 feets) per year during its first years of cultivation. Compared to other Paulownias, its habit is almost conical, it grows taller than wider.

This characteristic does not diminish its floral qualities, in April-May, magnificent clusters of blue, bell-shaped flowers with lilac hues and a creamy yellow throat bloom. The large light green leaves, measuring 15-20cm (5.9 - 7.9in) in diameter, accompany the end of the flowering and provide beautiful shade throughout the summer.

Paulownia fortunei Fast Blue is a tall tree that easily reaches 6m (19in 8ft) in height in less than 10 years, but its spread will not exceed half of its height. It is a sumptuous ornamental tree, easy to grow and very hardy, which will have a stunning effect in a large park.

Planting and care

Plant Paulownia fortunei Fast Blue in a sunny location, possibly with some light shade. It appreciates any type of soil as long as it is deep and you provide good drainage; stagnant soils can cause the attack of wood-decay fungi (such as the honey fungus). After planting, water generously to eliminate air pockets.

In case of drought, water for a few weeks to promote root development. To allow you to walk underneath the mature tree, prune the lower branches when still young. Other than that, simply remove diseased branches and dead wood, and occasionally thin out the centre of the tree by pruning branches that cross. Be careful not to prune too large branches as this will make your tree susceptible to fungi and weaken it irreversibly; it is preferable to only cut branches smaller than 3cm (1.2 in) in diameter. For pollarding, cut your tree to ground level each year, the leaves will be very large but you won't get any flowers.

Care

Pruning instructions To allow movement under the Paulownia, prune the lower branches while your tree is still young. At the end of winter, remove any diseased branches and dead wood. You can also thin out the centre of the tree by pruning crossing branches. Be careful not to cut off overly large branches, as this will make your tree susceptible to fungi and weaken it irreversibly. It is preferable to keep to diameters under 3cm. For coppiced pruning, cut your tree back to ground level each year; the leaves will be very large, but you will not achieve flowering.
