Very mixed results, out of 3 young plants bought, one is superb, the other more hesitant, and the last one downright morbid, I don't think its chances are very good...

Description

TheĀ Philadelphus 'Belle Etoile', or mock orange, is a highly fragrant, bushy shrub that blooms in spring on its arching branches. It is a Lemoine hybrid dating back to 1930 and is very popular, with good reason.

The genus Philadelphus belongs to the Hydrangea family. The 'Belle Etoile' variety is a compact bush with a rounded, almost weeping habit and arching branches. At maturity, it reaches a height of 2m (7ft), with a spread of 1.10m (4ft). During May and June, its flowering quickly reveals itself and delights with its fragrance, evoking strawberries. The creamy white petals are slightly darkened with a purple spot in the centre. The flowers cluster in large numbers on somewhat drooping branches, adding roundness to the garden. It will bring great elegance to small sunny or semi-shaded gardens. The deciduous foliage appears in spring. Its tender green colour, with a lovely brightness, enlivens your garden during long summer evenings.

Philadelphus, sometimes called poet's jasmine, are perfectly hardy shrubs and thrive in all soil types. They withstand summer drought but prefer constant humidity. 'Belle Etoile' is well suited for hedge compositions, whether free or formal, but you can also choose to plant it as a standalone in a small garden. Pair it with light-coloured plants such as geraniums, forget-me-nots, or hydrangeas.

Planting and care

The Philadelphus 'Belle Etoile' thrives in sunny or semi-shaded positions. Plant it from September to February in any soil, even poor or limestone soil, by incorporating leaf compost for better growth. Water abundantly on the day of planting, then once or twice a week for a month and a half. Stop watering in case of frost. Apply a magnesium-rich fertiliser after flowering. Pruning should be done after flowering, although it is not necessary. Philadelphus plants tolerate severe pruning well, often required for hedge formation.
