Description

Photinia serratifolia Crunchy is an evergreen and unique bush: with undulate and dentate leaves and copper-coloured young shoots that turn chocolate brown. It is a novelty from 2015. This bush will fit perfectly in hedges as it tolerates pruning very well, and can even be used in a single variety hedge.

Photinias belong to the rose family and originate from the Himalayas, the Far East and Southeast Asia. It is a quite common genus due to its easy cultivation. The Photinia serratifolia Crunchy is an upright and well-branched bush. It is hardy, undemanding, and fast-growing, and well-suited for pruning.

Its major interest lies in the originality of its shiny green foliage, which is undulate and dentate with young shoots that colour in spring with a warm coppery tone that turns chocolate brown. Hence its nickname "crunchy".

Reaching a height of 2 metres (6.56 feets), it will easily fit within a single-species or mixed hedge. When planted in the back of a flower bed, you can associate it with perennial plants with delicious colours and evocative names such as Heuchera Tiramisu or Heuchera Peach Flambé. Photinia serratifolia Crunchy will bring a touch of fantasy to your garden.

If you do not prune it at the end of spring, you will benefit from beautiful creamy white panicles from April to June.

This new variety won the first prize at the FLORMAT - MIFLOR 2014 exhibition (Italy)

Planting and care

Although generally tolerant, Photinia serratifolia Crunchy will appreciate being planted in well-drained, humus-rich soil, without too much limestone.

Provide it with a sunny or semi-shaded exposure. Avoid exposing it to cold winds and mulch at its base.

Regular pruning will allow the bush to branch out and produce more colourful young shoots.

This new variety is resistant to powdery mildew. However, like all Rosaceae, the Photinia can be infected by bacterial fire blight, in which case any shoot that suddenly wilts and displays a hook-like shape should be promptly removed.
