Description

Prostanthera cuneata is a shrub with evergreen foliage, forming spreading mats covered with tubular flowers, washed white with mauve and speckled with purple on the inside.

Originating from Southeast Australia, Prostanthera cuneata is also called Australian Mint due to its fragrant leaves.  It belongs to the family Lamiaceae. It has a bushy, spreading and dense habit. It will not exceed 60cm (24in) in height and will spread over more than a metre in width. Its foliage consists of round, dark green leaves, fragrant to the touch. They measure about 1 cm (1in) in diameter and are highly aromatic when crushed. During the months of May to August, the top of the stems are adorned with clusters of tubular flowers, washed white with pale mauve and speckled with purple.

Prostanthera cuneata grows in sunny or partially shaded positions, in a well-drained, acidic to neutral and moist soil. Hardy up to -12°C, it requires a protected position and is sensitive to winter moisture. Plant it in a rockery, along the edge of a bed or along a wall, accompanied by plants such as Heathers, Baby's Breath or Japanese Azaleas.

Hardy down to -12°C (10.4°F), it requires a sheltered location and is sensitive to moisture in winter. It will need pruning after flowering to remove its clusters of flowers and dead wood. You can also thin out the plant to allow light into the centre of the plant. Protect it from severe cold in winter.
