Beautiful autumnal colours, especially when backlit. Resumption in progress in March with big leaf buds. Waiting for the next flowering.

Description

Prunus serrulata 'Royal Burgundy', commonly known as the Japanese Cherry Tree, is a spreading tree with deciduous foliage that is green and red in colour, and has a very decorative flowering. Its flowers are deep pink in colour and bloom from April to May.

Originating from Japan, Prunus serrulata 'Royal Burgundy' has a spreading habit, reaching a height of 5 m (16 ft 5 in) and a spread of 3 to 4 m (9 ft 10 in to 13 ft 1 in). Its spring flowering in April to May produces beautiful double flowers, measuring 4 cm (1.6 in) in diameter, that open at the same time as the leaves, creating a charming contrast between the flowers and the foliage. The flowering is abundant, covering the branches entirely. Its deciduous leaves, measuring 6 to 12 cm (2.4 to 4.7 in) in length, are green and red in colour.

Whether planted as a specimen, in a mass planting, or as a hedge, it will captivate attention with its magnificent spring flowering. It adds a beautiful touch to any garden.

Hardy down to -15 °C (5 °F), Prunus serrulata 'Royal Burgundy' thrives in sunny locations. Plant it in moist soil from September to June, and lightly prune it after its flowering from May to June. Water it generously after planting, and then it can tolerate less frequent watering. Plant it in a sheltered area, as its flowers are sensitive to cold winter winds and rain.
