Description
The jewel of your collection! The rare Rhododendron cinnabarinum originating from the high Himalayan mountains of Nepal, Sikkim, Bhutan, Tibet, and southwest China, with beautiful bell-shaped flowers in shades of orange to brick-red.
Rhododendron cinnabarinum forms a bush with a loose habit up to 3m (10ft) tall. It has oval-shaped leaves, rather small, dark green with a glossy appearance, glaucous when young, evergreen to semi-evergreen, scale-like on the undersides and petioles. The flowering in May-June is particularly abundant and spectacular on well-established plants. The flowers are tubular, trumpet-shaped, and their colour ranges from orange to red on the reverse, creating a beautiful contrast that is both soft and warm.
Despite its exotic appearance, Rhododendron cinnabarinum is hardy down to -10 to -15°C. It prefers a semi-shaded to relatively sunny location. This acid-loving bush of heathland soil requires a moist and well-drained soil, rich in humus. It should be protected from cold and drying winds. Please note, this species is susceptible to powdery mildew attacks.
Did you know? It is one of the first rhododendrons to have been discovered in nature, by Hooker in 1849 in the mountains of Sikkim, a state in northern India. However, it remains rare in cultivation and in our gardens. It takes its name from the word cinnabar, a synonym for mercury and by analogy defining the cinnamon or vermilion red colour. There are numerous forms and colors in nature, ranging from yellow to purple, as this species has a wide distribution in the Himalayan mountains, at altitudes ranging from 1900m (6234ft) to 4000m (13123ft), in the territories of Nepal, India, Tibet, and China.

Plant Rhododendron cinnabarinum in a semi-shaded position, protected from cold and drying winds, in a moist, humus-rich, and light soil, with a tendency towards acidity. Like all plants of the heathland, it does not tolerate chalky soils or heavy soils that are waterlogged in winter. Dig a hole three times larger than the pot. Soak the root ball in non-calcareous water and plant the bush at the level of the collar, in a mixture composed of 1/4 turf, leaf compost, gravel or pumice, and loam. Water generously and keep the soil moist in summer. Azaleas and Rhododendrons have a shallow root system. Therefore, they are sensitive to long periods of drought. That is why it is recommended to enrich the soil with humus and water abundantly during dry periods. Moreover, this root system is not very strong, which is why it is essential to lighten heavy soils with draining materials (gravel, pumice, clay balls) when planting. Apply a mulch of shredded pine bark at the base of the bush every spring to maintain soil moisture and acidity. Maintenance involves removing faded flowers in summer and cleaning dead branches. Azaleas and Rhododendrons can sometimes be attacked by weevils that eat the edges of leaves and rootlets, as well as the infamous "rhododendron beetle" which doesn't often cause severe damage. There are effective natural solutions against weevils. Be careful, Rhododendron cinnabarinum is susceptible to attacks by powdery mildew (white fuzz on the foliage caused by a fungus). It can also be attacked at the collar by Phytophthora, a fungus that causes rapid and irreversible wilting if the soil remains too moist. Yellowing of the leaves (chlorosis) in Rhododendron indicates poor assimilation of iron in the soil and leads to premature death of the plant. While limestone is often the cause, poorly drained soil or a deeply planted root ball can also explain the phenomenon.
