More information

Rhododendron ‘Eucharitis’ is a slow-growing, evergreen shrub with a rounded habit and dark green foliage. In May-June, it produces trusses of large, pale pink flowers edged with cyclamen pink, speckled with brownish red in the throat. Its modest size makes it suitable for small gardens and container growing. Hardy to -15°C, it requires an acidic, humus-bearing, moist but well-drained soil, and partial shade.

Description

Rhododendron ‘Eucharitis’ is a hybrid with a rounded, compact habit, evergreen and floriferous, very decorative in acid soil beds, semi-shaded edges and large containers. Its clusters of pale pink flowers, edged with a deeper pink, appear in late spring. Its moderate growth allows it to be integrated into many gardens, provided it can be given favourable soil and climate.

Belonging to the Ericaceae family, ‘Eucharitis’ is a hybrid Rhododendron cultivar; it is a European development, often produced in Belgium and France. The shrub has a dense, rounded habit, as wide as it is tall, and slow growth. Cultivated dimensions indicate 1.20 m to 1.50 m tall and wide at 10 years of age. The evergreen foliage consists of large, dark green, matt, leathery, elliptical to ovate leaves. The root system is superficial, very clustered and fine; it prefers a constantly moist, acid soil, neither compact nor calcareous.
Flowering takes place from late May to June in the form of globose inflorescences of wide-open, funnel-shaped corollas. The flowers are a very pale pink with a white centre, highlighted by a cyclamen pink border; the throat often bears a spot or pits of reddish-brown. The flowers are produced in abundance. This variety is hardy down to approximately −15 °C.

Plant Rhododendron ‘Eucharitis’ in an acid soil bed, or in a 50 cm diameter container. Combine it with other evergreen acid-soil shrubs such as Pieris japonica ‘Forest Flame’, Kalmia latifolia 'Madeline’ or Enkianthus campanulatus 'Prettycoat'; choose other rhododendrons to plant with it, for example ‘Polaris’, ‘Madame Masson’, ‘Fantastica’ or ‘Schneekrone’ to stagger flowering and keep to pastel tones.

The success of hybrid rhododendrons in Western Europe relied on the use of Asian species from forest edges that love peaty and humus-bearing soils; ‘Eucharitis’ embodies this horticultural line of "light woodland" which popularised acid soil beds in 20th-century gardens.

Planting and care

Plant Rhododendron 'Eucharistis' in a semi-shaded position, sheltered from cold and drying winds. It requires damp, humus-bearing, light soil with a slightly acidic tendency. Like all ericaceous plants, it cannot tolerate calcareous soils, nor heavy, waterlogged soils in winter. If the soil remains moist in summer, this rhododendron will also tolerate exposure to morning sun. Avoid planting at its base, as its shallow roots do not compete well with other plants, especially for water resources.

Dig a hole three times the volume of the pot. Soak the root ball in (non-calcareous) water and plant the shrub at collar level in a mixture composed of 1/4 peat, leaf mould, gravel or pozzolana, and loam. Water generously and keep the soil moist in summer. Azaleas and Rhododendrons have a limited root system. Consequently, they don't cope well with long periods of drought. That is why humus-enriched soil and abundant watering during dry spells are recommended. Moreover, this root system is not very strong, hence it is essential to lighten heavy soils with draining materials (gravel, pozzolana, clay pebbles) at planting time. Apply a mulch of ground pine bark at the base of the shrub every spring to keep the soil moist while maintaining an acidic pH.

Maintenance consists of cutting off faded flowers in summer and cleaning away dead branches. Azaleas and Rhododendrons can sometimes be attacked by vine weevils, which eat the edges of leaves and the rootlets, as well as by the famous 'rhododendron lace bug', which does not often cause severe damage. Effective organic solutions now exist against vine weevils. Yellowing of leaves (chlorosis) in Rhododendron indicates poor iron assimilation in the soil and leads to the premature death of the plant. Applying iron chelate diluted in water may help. However, though lime is often the cause, poorly drained soil or a root ball planted too deeply can also explain the phenomenon.

Rhododendrons are at their best in cooler climates, planted in acidic soil and in a humid environment. Growing them in warmer, drier climates is usually doomed to failure in the long term, despite all efforts to acclimate them.
