It's a wonder in flower, they look like lily flowers. I can only recommend it, but it needs to be planted in a sheltered spot.

Description

Rhododendron lindleyi is a remarkable botanical species known for the size of its flowers, which resemble those of the royal lily, and especially for their powerful fragrance, described as sweet and spicy. It is a rare species because it is difficult to propagate!

The Rhododendron lindleyi is native to the Himalayan mountains, where it grows in magnolia forests between 2000 and 3500 metres (6500 and 11500 feet) above sea level, most often as an epiphyte on tree trunks or on very rocky soils. In its natural habitat, it can reach heights of up to 5 metres (16 feet). Hardy down to -8 to -10°C, it requires a sheltered location in light, well-drained acidic soil in partial shade, as it prefers slightly warmer conditions than in full shade! A slight slope can help ensure good drainage. The presence of lightly foliaged trees, such as pines, can also contribute to its well-being.

In most european gardens, this species grows about 10cm (4in) per year and reaches a height of approximately 3 metres at maturity. Its growth is very upright and mainly occurs from the base. The branches are not heavily branched, giving it a somewhat lanky appearance. The dark green leaves, tough and deeply veined, are elliptical to oblong in shape and measure 12 to 15cm (5 to 6in) long by 4 to 5cm (2in) wide. They have a glaucous and fuzzy underside.

The flowering is doubly spectacular due to its size and fragrance and occurs in May. Initially white-green in buds, the flowers open up to a beautiful milky white, sometimes slightly tinged with pink on the outside, and have a small yellow-orange throat. The black stamens provide a touch of original contrast! Grouped in 5 or 6, the flowers are trumpet-shaped and measure up to 10cm (4in) long: they closely resemble those of the royal lilies with which they share a pleasant and powerful fragrance, exceptional for a rhododendron!

Planting and care

Plant Rhododendron lindleyi in a semi-shaded position, protected from cold and drying winds, in a moist, humus-rich and light soil with an acidic tendency. Like all plants in the heathland soil, it does not tolerate limestone soils or heavy soils saturated with water in winter. Dig a hole with a volume three times larger than the pot. Soak the root ball in non-limestone water and plant the bush at the neck level, in a mixture composed of leaf compost, gravel or pumice, and loam. Water generously and keep the soil moist in summer. Azaleas and Rhododendrons have a shallow root system. Therefore, they are susceptible to long periods of drought. That's why soil enriched with humus and occasional watering during dry periods are recommended. Apply a mulch of crushed pine bark around the base of the bush every spring to maintain soil moisture and acidic pH. This thick mulch will also protect its roots from frost. Maintenance involves removing faded flowers in summer and cleaning dead branches.
