Description

The Rhododendron 'Gedser Gold' is a new Danish variety known for its hardiness, compact habit, and particularly bright lemon-yellow flowering. In spring, this bush uniquely brightens up shaded areas in the garden or on the terrace. Clothed in evergreen foliage of dark green, it remains attractive all year round. This variety thrives, whether in the ground or in a pot, in humid climates and non-calcareous soil rich in humus.

Rhododendrons are plants from the ericaceae family, just like heathers, plants that prefer, for the most part, soils devoid of limestone, with a tendency towards acidity, and humid temperate climates. The 'Gedser Gold' variety is a recently selected horticultural hybrid from Denmark. It slowly forms a rounded bush that reaches 1m (3ft) in height and spread at the age of 10 years. Under good growing conditions, a plant will eventually reach between 1.40m (5ft) and 1.80m (6ft) in height. Its tough, dark green leaves, which can measure up to 8.5cm (3in) in length, are elongated and lanceolate in shape. They have a pronounced central vein. Flowering occurs in May in moderate climates. It takes the form of loose corymbs or clusters of several funnel-shaped light lemon-yellow flowers. The throat of the flower, which holds long stamens with brown anthers, is adorned with small red spots. This flowering is not fragrant.

The Rhododendron 'Gedser Gold' is an excellent bush for acid soil, both hardy and cheerful. It will look stunning in the middle of a flower bed, in a shaded rockery, or as a standalone specimen. It will dress up the garden all year round and bring it to life in spring with its sunny flowering. For example, pair it with ferns, Pieris, Kalmias, or even Azaleas and Japanese Maples that thrive in similar environments. It can be grown in a container, provided it is given an acidic and well-drained substrate, special fertilizer for acid-loving plants, and regular watering with non-calcareous water.

Planting and care

Plant the Rhododendron 'Gedser Gold' in a partially shaded or sunny, non-burning location, protected from cold and drying winds, in a soil that does not dry out, humus-rich and light, with a tendency towards acidity. Like all plants in the heath family, it does not tolerate limestone soils or heavy soils that are waterlogged in winter. It has excellent cold resistance. Dig a hole three times larger than the pot volume. Soak the root ball in non-limestone water and plant the bush at the collar level, in a mixture composed of 1/4 turf, leaf compost, gravel or pumice, and loam. Water generously and keep the soil moist in summer. Azaleas and Rhododendrons have a shallow root system. Therefore, they are susceptible to long periods of drought. That is why it is recommended to enrich the soil with humus and water abundantly during dry periods. In addition, this root system is not very strong, so it is essential to lighten heavy soils with draining materials (gravel, pumice, clay pellets) at planting. Apply a mulch of shredded pine bark around the base of the bush every spring to maintain soil moisture while preserving an acidic pH.

Maintenance consists of removing faded flowers in summer and cleaning dead branches. Azaleas and Rhododendrons can sometimes be attacked by weevils that eat the edges of leaves and rootlets, as well as the famous "rhododendron beetle" that does not often cause severe damage. Yellowing of leaves (chlorosis) in Rhododendrons indicates poor assimilation of iron in the soil and can lead to premature death of the plant. While limestone is often the cause, poorly drained soil or a deeply planted root ball can also explain the phenomenon.
