Received a lovely young plant, a bit small but sturdy, just waiting to grow well. It looks perfectly healthy and well-rooted.

Description

The Skimmia reevesiana is an adorable small scented bush that structures and illuminates even the smallest spaces in shaded areas, thanks to its evergreen foliage that adorns itself with spectacular cherry-red fruiting.

Like boxwood, it is an essential architectural plant because its naturally rounded silhouette, compact habit, and small size (it does not exceed 1 metre (3 feet) in height) make it the ideal companion for small gardens, terraces, and other balconies (especially in pots) in the midst of which it provides a permanent decoration.

The skimmia reevesiana also forms a beautiful accent plant. It has dark green, simple, tough, and shiny foliage covered with pinkish-white flower buds exuding the scent of orange blossom in spring (April-May) and then with a myriad of red berries in autumn and winter.

For the best results, we recommend cultivating Skimmia Reevesiana in humus-rich soil, which receives some sun but is also partially shaded. If the soil is not acidic enough, you can add ericaceous soil to the planting hole to help the plant establish itself. Additionally, mulching the base with pine bark will provide extra nutrients. Remove any unnecessary branches that could unbalance it after the plant has flowered (usually in March or April).

We suggest pairing Skimmia Reevesiana with bamboo and lady's mantle plants to create an enchanting display. Bamboo will provide a transparent backdrop to help the red flowers and fruits of Skimmia Reevesiana stand out. Lady's mantle plants and parrot tulip bulbs are also great options for this display. Together, they will create a beautiful and subtle border for your garden.

Planting and care

To ensure optimal growth, plant it in soil that is rich in humus and place it in a location that is slightly sunny or shaded. If the soil is too alkaline, you can acidify it by adding pine bark to the planting hole and cover the base with a bark mulch. After it has finished flowering (March-April), prune any unnecessary branches that could cause it to become unbalanced.
