The highly original flowering of this bush is not its only attraction. In addition to magnificent clusters of white-edged purple flowers that perfume the spring, it is hardy and suitable for most climates. Its has multiple uses: standalone, in a free hedge, in the back of a flowerbed.

Description

The Sensation Lilac, also known as Syringa vulgaris, is a hardy bush that adapts to different climatic conditions and can withstand temperatures as low as -15°C. Its fragrance is, of course, its most well-known attraction, but Sensation also offers unique flowering which, being bicoloured, is relatively rare among lilacs. From April, if the temperatures are mild, it adorns itself with clusters of purple flowers with white edges until May, thus attracting pollinators.

Present in European gardens since the 17th century, the Lilac was very fashionable in the 19th century. It is true that it has everything to charm: it tolerates all types of soil, although it prefers moist soil, and offers generous and splendid flowering while perfuming the spring garden or our interiors with its bouquets.

It is a tall bush (4 meters) with an upright and slightly bushy habit. It can be maintained or pruned, but subsequent flowering will be reduced. Its deciduous leaves are ovate, wide, and heart-shaped, with a refreshing green color. They are the setting for long pyramid-shaped thyrses of about 15 cm (5.9 in), composed of multiple small flowers measuring one centimeter. These flowers are single, tubular, with four lobes turned back. They are both simple and charming, like first loves, which Lilacs symbolize in the language of flowers.

Far from being outdated, the Syringa vulgaris is an essential in our gardens. It mixes with other bushes to alternate blooms in a hedge - after Forsythias and viburnums, and before buddleias. It perfumes the surroundings under the first warm rays of the sun and constitutes a magnificent centerpiece for a bed, stealing the show during its flowering period.

Planting and care

The Sensation Lilac appreciates full sun, in soil that remains fairly moist and well-drained. It can tolerate any type of soil, but prefers slightly alkaline soils and is sensitive to strongly acidic soils. It will grow well in partially shaded areas, but flowering may be reduced. Easy to grow, it only requires mulching in dry climates during the summer to retain some moisture. Water it in the first few years in case of pronounced drought. You can prune the flowering branches to make beautiful bouquets, or at the end of flowering to encourage the appearance of new blooms and prevent the bush from becoming exhausted. Avoid severe pruning that limits the following spring's flowering, unless your Syringa becomes too large.
