Description

The Tamarix tetrandra, also known as spring tamarisk, is a large deciduous bush. This hardy bush reveals a hazy pink flowering in early spring, followed by delicate foliage replacing the flowers. It withstands dryness and sea spray well, and its flowers make an ideal companion to floral compositions, just like baby's breath.

The Tamarix tetrandra is a large bush with a rounded habit, reaching a height and spread of 2 to 3 m. It is renowned for its abundant spring flowering, with pink spikes, appearing from May to June, which arch its branches. Its green foliage emerges after the flowering. With a slender and narrow shape, it continues the misty effect of the spring flower spikes throughout the rest of the season. Its bark is reddish-brown, enhancing its flowering and foliage.

Easy to grow, the Spring Tamarisk thrives in well-drained and non-calcareous soil. Its ability to withstand saline environments makes it a solution for coastal gardens. Native to China, it has good hardiness (-15°C (5°F)). Plant it as a standalone young plant, in rows, or in flowerbeds, alongside Griselinia, Spartium (Spanish broom), Cistus, Atriplex, and more. Prefers a sunny exposure to achieve a well-developed bush.

Planting and care

Plant it in coastal gardens where you can create dense windbreaks by pruning it severely into a bush. Water and fertilizer inputs are unnecessary. For an even more abundant flowering, prune the tamarisk every year in February, down to the level of the old wood.
