Description

Our Vitex Collection, in Latin Vitex agnus-castus, consists of three different varieties: 'Delta Blues', 'Pink Pinnacle' and 'Alba'. These bushes, also known as the Chaste Tree, are perfect for adding a touch of colour and structure to your Mediterranean borders. They feature grey-green aromatic foliage that adds an interesting texture to the garden. Their flowerings, which extend from summer to autumn, range from deep blue to soft pink and pure white. Highly drought-resistant and tolerant of poor soils, these hardy bushes can withstand temperatures down to -15°C. They prefer full sun and well-drained soil, making them ideal choices for Mediterranean gardens.

It comprises:

1 x Vitex agnus-castus 'Delta Blues': A compact chaste tree, reaching 1.2 m in height and width, with deep blue, fragrant spikes of flowers that attract butterflies and bees. Flowering from July to September.

1 x Vitex agnus-castus 'Pink Pinnacle': This variety is distinguished by its pale pink flowering and upright habit. The bush will reach 1.5 m in height. Its green foliage with silver hues complements its flowers beautifully. Flowering from June to August.

1 x Vitex agnus-castus 'Alba': A graceful bush that can reach up to 4 m in height. It produces an abundance of pure white flowers from July to October.

The chaste trees in this collection should be planted in March-April or in autumn, in a sunny spot in the garden, in borders. For a harmonious effect, arrange the plants so that the Vitex 'Alba', the tallest, is at the back of your border, with 'Pink Pinnacle' in the centre and 'Delta Blues' at the front. Leave about 1.5 m of space between 'Delta Blues' and 'Pink Pinnacle' and up to 2 m around 'Alba' to allow each plant to fully develop. With these spacings, the border will ultimately occupy an area of 9 to 12 m².

Pair Vitex agnus-castus with shrubs that enjoy full sun and dry soils. Place 3 Caryopteris 'Heavenly Blue' at the front of the border to add a touch of electric blue in late summer. In the centre, integrate 2 Teucrium fruticans 'Azureum' (Shrubby Germander) whose silver-grey foliage and small dark blue flowers blend perfectly with the brighter tones of the Chaste Trees. Finally, add 3 Artemisias 'Powis Castle' among the other plants. Their bushy habit and finely dissected silver foliage will highlight all the neighbouring plants. These combinations will create a balanced and easy-to-maintain Mediterranean border.

Planting and care

Vitex agnus-castus is a hardy Mediterranean bush that is easy to cultivate and prefers a position in full sun and well-drained soil. It tolerates poor, dry soils well, but thrives better in slightly fertile, moist soil when it is a young plant. Once well established, the chaste tree requires little watering and can withstand periods of drought. However, regular watering in the early years of planting is essential to ensure good root development. Hardy down to -15°C, Vitex can be grown in many regions, but in colder areas, it is advisable to protect it from cold, drying winds to avoid winter damage. Lastly, the chaste tree is not particularly susceptible to diseases and parasitic organisms.
