Description
The Telopea Emperor's Torch is an evergreen and bushy shrub of a mild climate, close to the proteas, with a preference for poor, well-drained soils and full sun. This selection is distinguished by a magnificent spring flowering, which covers its bluish and leathery foliage with large globular inflorescences of a very bright pink almost red, formed by tubular flowers surrounded by bracts of the same tone. A rare, original and unusual plant at the same time, whose cultivation is sometimes delicate in too rich soil and humid summer climates.
The Telopea 'Emperor's Torch' is a hybrid resulting from the cross-breeding between a Telopea speciosissima, the floral emblem of New South Wales in Australia, and Telopea oreades, native to cool undergrowth of mountain slopes in southeastern Australia. This wooded and ramified plant is part of the proteaceae family. The 'Emperor's Torch' cultivar forms a bush reaching easily 2 m (7ft) in height in our climates, with a span of 1.20 m (4ft) under favorable conditions. The alternate, simple and leathery leaves, cuneiform in shape, are covered with a wax responsible for their bluish appearance and are inserted along the entire length of the stems. The bush produces in spring, in May-June, at the end of the branches, sumptuous carmine floral heads, 8 cm (3in) wide, composed of a dense heart of incurved tubular flowers, surrounded by bright red bracts. The flowers are highly appreciated in floristry, due to their excellent vase life.
The Telopea 'Emperor's Torch' is a plant with a very exotic appearance that deserves to be tried in cultivation. It will preferably be planted in coastal gardens spared from heavy frosts, in very light, well-drained soil, with an acidic tendency, poor in nitrates and phosphorus. Sometimes difficult to grow in humid climates, it will be the pride of its happy owner, planted in isolation, on a large slope or in the background of dry garden beds, but always in a sheltered and sunny position. In a garden of exotic inspiration, it can be associated with cordylines, proteas or Leucadendron, Canary Island viper's bugloss, Euphorbia characias, Euphorbia mellifera, Giant fennel, Melianthus major, palm trees or Leptospermum. This bush also grows very well in a container or a large pot, to adorn the terrace or balcony of an informed amateur.

Planting and care
Plant Telopea 'Emperor's Torch' in a very sunny location, sheltered from cold winds, in a well-drained soil, even sandy. Immerse the root ball in a container of water for a few minutes. Remove the plant from its pot. Dig a wide and deep hole. Place the root ball on a well-draining bed, composed of loose and light soil, leaf compost, and non-calcareous sand or gravel. Fill the hole with the same mixture. Water to ensure proper compaction around the roots. This plant fears overly rich and moist soils in summer, which can lead to root rot, but it needs water during the growing season, up to flowering, especially when grown in a pot. Do not use fertilizers, or only use a special protea amendment, low in nitrates and phosphates. Prune after flowering to maintain a compact habit. In the ground, prefer mulching over weeding to prevent the appearance of weeds and to protect the roots.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
