Description

This collection of 3 dwarf weigelas brings together varieties from the excellent 'Picobella' series with a highly compact growth habit. As floriferous and colourful as larger weigelas, these are small deciduous shrubs perfectly suited to small spaces and container gardening. From late spring to October, they are covered in bell-shaped flowers in bright red, pink, or white tones, depending on the plant. Easy to grow in any rich and moderately moist soil.

The collection includes:

1 Weigela x florida Picobella Rosa: bright pink flowers, very bushy growth, 40 cm (16in) tall and 60 cm (24in) wide.

1 Weigela x florida Picobella Rosso: bright red flowers, with a wider spread than height: 50 cm (20in) tall and 80 cm (32in) to 1 m (3ft) wide.

1 Weigela x florida Picobella Bianco: pure white flowers, with a second flowering period in September. It has a low and wide dome-shaped habit, 40-45 cm (16-18in) tall and 60 cm (24in) wide.

Hardy down to -20 °C (1°F), Weigela thrives in sunny positions, in rich, well-draining soil that doesn't dry out too much in summer. Take into account its mature spread when planting: space each plant 40 cm (16in) apart if planting in a mass planting, for example. For container gardening, choose a container that is at least 25 litres in size. Some ideas for companion plants: a dwarf abelia, a compact Mock Orange 'Little White Love' or a dwarf crape myrtle 'Petite Canaille'. Also consider planting dark-foliaged heucheras close to your dwarf weigelas, as these perennials will enhance their beauty.

Planting and care

Hardy up to -20 °C (1°F), Weigelas from the Picobella series thrive in sunny or partially shaded locations. Plant them in ordinary, loose, not too compact soil, with a neutral to slightly alkaline (lime-rich) pH, from October to March (excluding periods of frost and heatwaves). If you grow them in a container, use good quality horticultural compost, water regularly, and apply organic fertiliser in spring. This shrub adapts to many regions, but not in Mediterranean areas where summers are too hot and dry. To maintain a compact habit and promote abundant flowering, shorten the branches that were bearing flowers by 2/3, just after the flowering period.
