Description

This collection of weigelas for containers will delight lovers of flower-filled terraces and small gardens. These compact shrubs, which do not exceed 60 cm (24in) in height, offer not only generous flowering in white, pink, and deep pink tones in May-June, but also highly ornamental, variegated or more or less purple foliage, depending on the plant. They can be grouped together in a large flowerpot, planted in separate pots, or used in the centre of a small dedicated flowerbed. Just like larger varieties, these small Weigelas are easy to grow in any fresh and loose soil, even lime-rich.

The collection includes:

1 Weigela florida 'Verweig' MONET: variegated leaves that emerge pink and then become green with white margins. Lovely deep pink flowers.

1 Weigela florida Black and White ® 'Courtacad1': dark purple-green foliage and trumpet-shaped, ivory-white flowers with a purple base.

1 Weigela florida Minor Black ® 'Verweig 3': dark purple foliage, deep pink flowers in May-June, and sometimes again in September.

Hardy up to -20 °C (1°F), Weigela thrives in sunny locations with soils that don't dry out too much in summer. When grown in a container, it should be watered regularly from spring to autumn and will appreciate the addition of fertiliser for flowering shrubs. In a flower bed, you can plant it alongside other compact shrubs such as Caryopteris, shrubby Salvias, or a dwarf Mock Orange for fragrance. To compensate for the weigela's lack of foliage in winter, pair it with evergreen shrubs like the shrubby honeysuckle Lonicera nitida 'Scoop', for example.

Planting and care

Hardy down to -20 °C (1°F), Weigela florida thrives in sunny or partially shaded positions. Plant it in ordinary, loose soil that is not too compact, with a neutral to slightly alkaline pH (chalky), from October to March (excluding periods of frost and heatwaves). It adapts well to many regions, but not in Mediterranean areas where summers are too hot and dry. To maintain a compact habit and promote flowering, prune back the branches that have borne spring flowers by 2/3, just after flowering.
