Description

Weigela florida Colourtwist® Sunny Side Up offers a bright and generous flowering in late spring, in the form of beautiful white corollas adorned with a yellow spot at the base of the throat. This easy, very hardy, bushy deciduous shrub will find a place in a flower bed, within a flowering hedge, as a standalone specimen near a terrace, or in a large pot to highlight an entrance.

Belonging to the Caprifoliaceae family, this weigela descends from the species Weigela florida. Its cultivar name is ‘VUKOZ041323’; it is marketed under two commercial names depending on the region: Czechmark® Sunny Side Up® in North America and Colourtwist® Sunny Side Up in Europe.
This clone, selected by Vojtěch Benetka at the VÚKOZ institute in Průhonice (Czech Republic), originates from cross-breeding carried out in 2004 between a female sowing and Weigela ‘Volans’.
It is a bush with a rounded and compact habit, of medium-fast growth; it reaches approximately 1.80 m in height with a spread of 1.30 m at maturity. Its deciduous foliage features opposite, ovate leaves 7–8 cm long by 3–4 cm wide, finely toothed, bright green on top and lighter underneath, slightly hairy. The flowers are gathered in small clusters; they are tubular-flared corollas with 5 lobes, measuring 2 to 2.5 cm in length and 2 cm in diameter, white with a yellow throat; this flowering period extends from late May to early July, with a slight summer rebloom if the plant is well-fed and watered. This variety is hardy down to at least −25 °C.

Plant Weigela Colourtwist® Sunny Side Up in a large sunny flower bed, incorporate it into an informal hedge, or grow it in a pot 50-60 cm wide on a sheltered terrace. You can pair it with Ceanothus Gloire de Versailles with blue flowers, spring spiraeas and Deutzia; it can also be accompanied by other colourful weigelas such as Bristol Ruby, Red Prince, Nana Variegata or Alexandra to play with volumes and colours.
