Description

Weigela florida 'Midnight Wine' is a shrub with a globose habit, dark purple deciduous foliage and carmine-pink flowers that bloom abundantly from May to June.

Originating from China, Weigela florida 'Midnight Wine' is a compact and globose young plant, measuring 40 cm (16 in) in height and 40 cm (16 in) in width. Its flowering from May to June is superb and abundant. Its flowers are funnel-shaped in corymbs and carmine-pink in colour. Its dark purple deciduous foliage is very decorative, with elliptical subsessile leaves. The branches of this shrub are arched and have two rows of hairs.

Hardy down to -15 °C (5 °F), Weigela florida 'Midnight Wine' thrives in sunny or semi-shaded positions. Plant it in a fresh soil with a neutral pH from October to March (excluding the frost period). In July, prune the older branches and branches that have produced a lot, as this will encourage beautiful flowering the following year.

Its compact size makes it suitable for small gardens where it can be used in pots to attract attention. In larger gardens, it can be placed in the front of flower beds or used as a low hedge.

It is highly appreciated for its dual appeal: its beautiful flowers and its purple foliage. It tolerates urban pollution very well, and attracts butterflies and hummingbirds.
