Description

Sorbet Narcissus is a spring plant with beautiful solitary flowers of a rare colour. Its outer petals are white, while its flattened crown is orange-yellow with white. The flowers are perched on long stems and emit a sweet scent. The deciduous green leaves are sword-shaped with entire edges.

Daffodils are loved because they are synonymous with spring. This Sorbet variety reaches a height of 40 cm (16in) at maturity. Native to the Mediterranean basin, this narcissus can be planted in flower pots, lawns, rockeries and pots. Its flowers can be cut for the vase. It is best not to mix them with other flowers.

Narcissus is toxic and does not tolerate bad weather such as rain, which damages the flower. Nevertheless, it is one of the most resistant autumn bulbs and faithfully returns each year. Narcissus is part of a Greek legend in which a handsome young man rejected the love of the nymph Echo. As a punishment, the gods made him love nothing but his own reflection. When he perched above a fountain to drink, Narcissus saw his reflection and remained in contemplation until he fell in and drowned, whereupon he was transformed into a flower.

Planting and care

Plant daffodils in full sun or partial shade. They are easy to grow and will thrive both in the shade of woodland and a sunny flower bed. They prefer moist but well-drained soils. Plant them in autumn, 15 cm (6in) deep and 10 cm (4in) apart in minimum clusters of 5 bulbs, in uniform or mixed colours. To plant them in a lawn: lift a patch of turf, dig and loosen the soil to a depth of at least 20 cm (8in) (the length of a spade), place your bulbs, cover them with soil and replace the turf. Choose a location where you won't mow, as you must let Daffodil leaves wither before cutting them. This is when the bulb replenishes itself and prepares the flowers for the following year. However, remove the flowers as soon as they have faded to prevent seed formation which would unnecessarily exhaust the bulb. Only cut the leaves when they have turned yellow and apply fertiliser at that time, not before. Maintain regular watering during the growing season and then let the soil dry out once the foliage has matured.
