Description

The 'Strawberry' Ice Cream Double Late Tulip is a variety with double peony-like flowers: there are so many petals inside the flower that they are pushed upwards. On the outside, the petals are green, opening up to a very abundant deep red corolla. The late flowering begins in May, and the flowers are large and long-lasting. The stem is short and sturdy, making this impressive tulip a useful subject in the garden, as well as in pots and containers.

The 'Strawberry' Ice Cream Tulip belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in the group of "Double Late Tulips", whose main characteristic is to have very double and crumpled flowers, resembling peonies. 'Strawberry' is not very tall, ranging from 20 to 30 cm, and its flower is of a beautiful size, double and well-arranged. It is a true favourite, especially when its buds slowly open in a vase. Flowering takes place in mid-May, at the end of the tulip season.

Double Late Tulips, with their varied, soft or intense colours, and their opulent and delicate flowers, add charm and romance to pots or sunny gardens. They harmonise with the most beautiful spring blooms and other tulips. When creating your flower beds, take into account the height and flowering time, which vary considerably depending on the cultivars. For cut flower enthusiasts, it is a good idea to plant a few extra bulbs, as these tulips hold up well in a vase. Ice Cream 'Strawberry' is an exceptional tulip, almost bicolour when it is not yet fully open, like a mint and strawberry ice cream. Pair it with other double-flowered tulips like 'Exquisit' and perennials with light flowers like Bleeding Hearts.

Planting and care

Plant Tulip Ice Cream Strawberry bulbs in the autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm, spacing them 10 cm apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add uncomposted manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The tulip will thrive in moist to dry soil in the summer. Place it in a good, sunny or partially shaded location. Once flowering is complete, it is best to remove the seed heads to avoid exhausting the bulb.
