Description

Intensely bright, cheerful, and fragrant, early single tulip Generaal De Wet has a narrow cup-shaped flower, in a classic shape, in rich yellow-orange tones. It blooms early in the tulip season on a short and sturdy stem. This ancient variety is considered one of the best oranges and is perfect for bouquets or flower beds.

The early single tulip 'Generaal De Wet' belongs to the Lily family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in Division 1 of tulips, which is characterized by early flowering. It was introduced in 1904 but still remains one of the most beautiful orange cultivars. It will reach a height of 35 cm (14in) when in bloom. Perched on sturdy stems well above the broadly lanceolate leaves, the sunny and bright flowers in a narrow cup shape blend a palette of light, vibrant or dark orange, against a golden yellow background. It flowers in March-April, at the beginning of the tulip season.

Early single tulips are famous for their rich colours and sturdy and robust flowers, which can be used in flower beds and bouquets. They are among the most planted varieties, unmatched for bringing the colors of spring to pots or sunny gardens. Remember to consider the height and flowering period when designing your flower beds, as these can vary significantly from one cultivar to another. It is a good idea to plant a few more bulbs for beautiful cut flowers that last a long time in vases.

Regarding botanical species: tulip species are found in most of the old world, from Western Europe to China and Japan, passing through Eastern Europe, Asia Minor, and Central Asia. Their distribution area also includes North Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The centre of diversity of the genus is in the Pamir and Hindu Kush mountains and the steppes of Kazakhstan.

There are various wild species, many of which are endangered. These are either large tulips from cultivated fields, the most well-known being the Agen tulip (Tulipa agenensis), or small tulips found in wooded areas or among rocks in the mountains. In cultivation, these are called "botanical tulips," and one of the most common is the wild tulip (Tulipa sylvestris), which often used to grow under the shelter of vines and whose subspecies australis is known as the southern tulip.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The 'General De Wet' tulip will thrive in soil which is moist to dry in summer, in a sunny or partially shaded location. Once flowering is complete, it is best to remove the seed heads to avoid exhausting the plant.
