Description

Tulip 'Jan Reus' is highly sought after for its elegance and vibrancy. This majestic tulip with its narrow corolla has velvety burgundy red petals that blend beautifully with lilac and orange colours. The flowers stand tall on thick and sturdy stems, 45 cm (18in) high, above the widely lanceolate green and deciduous leaves. It blooms in early spring, starting in April.

Tulip 'Jan Reus' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is classified in the Triumph group, known for flowers with a narrow cup shape. They are the result of cross-breeding between early single tulips and Darwin tulips. With their wide range of colours, strong and resilient flowers, suitable for both flower beds and bouquets, Triumph tulips are incredibly popular. They are among the most widely planted varieties.

When designing your flower beds, be sure to consider the height and flowering period, as these can vary significantly between different cultivars. After flowering, their foliage becomes unsightly, so we recommend planting heucheras, tiarelles, or brunneras in the foreground of your flower beds. The foliage of these beautiful perennial plants will enhance the colours of your tulips, and elegantly conceal their yellowing leaves. If you are a fan of floral arrangements, it is a good idea to plant a few for stunning cut flowers that last a long time in a vase.

Planting and care

Plant Jan Reus tulip bulbs in autumn, from October to December, at a depth of 15 cm (6in), 10 cm (4in) apart in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-drained soil. Do not add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Triumph tulips will grow well in moist to dry soil and appreciate a sunny or semi-shaded exposure. Once flowering is finished, it is best to remove the seed heads to avoid exhausting the plant. Allow the leaves to dry completely before cutting them.
