Description

Tulipa 'Strong Love' approaches perfection in the category of red-flowered tulips. It stands out with its purity and depth of colour, as well as the excellent longevity of its flowers, both in a vase and in a flower bed. With their classic cup shape, the flowers are borne on thick and sturdy stems that are resistant to bad weather. The flowers are ideal for creating elegant bouquets, either on their own or with white tulips, for example. It blooms in the middle of the tulip season, in April, depending on the climate.

Tulipa 'Strong Love' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it was introduced in 2006 in the Netherlands. It is currently classified in the 'Triumph' group, which is mainly characterised by narrow cup-shaped flowers. The flowers sit at the top of 40cm (16in) tall stems, above the broadly lanceolate green-blue leaves. These elegant and understated flowers boast a rich and pure red colour. They harmonise beautifully with a whole range of soft or vibrant colours in flower beds. They have a narrow cup shape, and display six "petals" (more precisely tepals) of a thick and slightly silky substance.

Tulipa 'Strong Love' looks wonderful in large flower beds. Its deep colour creates beautiful combinations with tulips in white, pink, mauve, black, or red tones. It works well with blue flowers (forget-me-nots, grape hyacinths, bluebells, hyacinths). The flowering period can be extended by planting it with other tulips and flowering plants. Pair it with white daffodils, lady's mantle or even hellebores and euphorbias for dazzling scenes. It goes perfectly with tall perennials. The flowers are ideal for creating elegant bouquets. Only use a little water in a vase. If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December. Choose a sunny or partially shaded location. Plant in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. Plant the bulbs at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. The bulbs will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Once flowering is finished, it is wise to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant.
