Description

Tulipa 'Pink Impression' triggers enthusiasm with its large, elongated, bright pink flower on a long, sturdy stem, making it a superb variety of Darwin tulip. Its sturdy stems are extremely weather resistant. It is fabulous when planted en masse. Its pale pink-edged and veined flower brings charm to borders and flower beds. It also blends wonderfully with other bulbs and makes an excellent cut flower. This variety is very durable and well-deserving of the Royal Horticultural Society's Award of Garden Merit.

 

Tulipa 'Pink Impression' belongs to the Liliaceae family. Of horticultural origin, it is currently classified in Division 4, characterised by large, single, oval-shaped flowers that appear in the middle of the season, carried by long, weather-resistant stems. Tulips in this group are the most cultivated for the cut flower trade. They are derived from cross-breeding with botanical species, including T. fosteriana. 'Pink Impression' reaches a height of 55cm (22in) when in bloom. The flower itself measures up to 10cm (4in) in height. It sits atop a sturdy stem, above lanceolate foliage. The thick, slightly waxy, but also translucent texture gives substance to the bright pink colour, which is subtly shaded with paler and deeper tones. Flowering generally begins in late April, with each flower lasting several days before fading.

Tulipa 'Pink Impression' is magnificent mixed in borders and large flower beds. As a cut flower, it forms beautiful and long-lasting bouquets. Pair it with other tulips of all colours. It is especially beautiful with T. 'Red Impression'. They form beautifully vibrant carpets when mixed with other spring bulbs and flowers, such as muscari, forget-me-nots, lady's mantle, acid-green euphorbias, and primroses. Its large size is perfect with spring perennials. It also dresses up pots and containers in the middle of spring. Only use a little water if placing in a vase. If your tulips open too quickly, you can add two to three ice cubes to the vase each day.

Planting and care

Plant the bulbs in autumn, from September to December, at a depth of 15cm (6in), spacing them 10cm (4in) apart. Plant in ordinary, slightly acidic, neutral, or slightly alkaline, loose, well-worked, and well-draining soil. Never add poorly decomposed manure or compost to the planting soil, as this could cause the bulbs to rot. The bulbs will grow well in moist to dry soil in summer. Plant in a sunny or partially shaded location. Once flowering is finished, it is wise to remove the fruits to avoid exhausting the plant. However, the leaves should only be removed when they are completely yellowed and dried, as they allow the bulb to replenish its reserves and thus ensure its longevity.
