Ornamental-leaved mints are fragrant varieties that are prized for their scent as well as the decorative appearance of their leaves. Variegated with cream, tinged with yellow or simply more colourful than classic mints, they add a little decorative touch to the vegetable garden, in a herb patch or on a patio. Their leaves can be harvested all summer long for infusions, refreshing drinks, fruit desserts, sauces or summer dishes.

Variegated mint, Mentha suaveolens 'Variegata', offers a very bright green and cream foliage accompanied by a soft, aromatic fragrance. Its "pineapple" version, Mentha suaveolens 'Pinedo', with its generous habit and pale leaves, is well suited to pots of fragrant herbs. Organic pineapple mint, Mentha rotundifolia 'Ananas', holds a fruity aroma in its reddish leaves, pleasant in desserts and infusions. Mentha x piperita 'Ginger', a peppermint with yellow-variegated leaves, offers a spicier ginger flavour, delicious in cooking as well as in homemade drinks.

Like other mints, they are easy to grow in moist soil or in pots. The articles "6 essential mints" and "How to keep mint fresh?" will guide you in comparing the fragrances, and give you tips on how to enjoy their flavour for longer.
