Description

The Baluroi F1 Eggplant is a vigorous variety resistant to diseases. It produces beautiful elongated fruits, 22 to 25 cm (9 to 10in) long, with a very dark shiny purple skin. Of very good taste quality, its skin contains a white flesh of excellent flavor. You will sow it in March - April to harvest it from July to October.

The eggplant was introduced to Europe around the 14th century in Spain and then in the 17th century in France. It has been cultivated in India and China since antiquity. Eggplant is eaten cooked, stuffed, in cream, gratin, and is used in the composition of ratatouille. Eggplant has calming and diuretic properties and contains vitamins A, B1, B2, B5, C and PP as well as iron and calcium.

Harvest: Between July and October, eggplants are harvested as needed and as they develop.

Storage: Eggplants can be stored for up to a week in the vegetable drawer of the refrigerator. Once steamed, they can be kept in the freezer for 6 to 8 months.

Gardener's tip: Perform regular weeding and hoeing. Prune the ends of the branches to facilitate fruit enlargement.

Planting and care

Sowing

The eggplant will require a supply of well-decomposed compost (3 kg/m²) in late autumn or early spring before sowing. The seeds are sown in pots filled with fine soil, in a warm place, indoors from February, in a bright location. From April, you can sow directly in the ground, in the final location. Keep the substrate moist. To facilitate germination, which can be capricious, leave the seeds in the bottom of the refrigerator for a few days (4 to 5°C).

Maintenance

When the plants have 5 to 6 leaves, transplant them into pots filled with soil or directly into the ground, in a warm location. Remove lateral shoots and pinch the plant when it has formed 2 or 3 clusters of flowers, this will promote branching. Remove suckers that develop at the base, as they tend to unnecessarily deplete the plant. Good mulching helps maintain soil moisture and reduce weed growth.
