Description

This Lamb's Lettuce is an excellent variety that is both early, fast-growing, productive, and of very good taste quality, producing beautiful round leaves. Resistant to cold and diseases. Presented in a seed tape, this lamb's lettuce is very easy to grow. Sow from August to October for a harvest from September to March.

These seeds are offered in tapes: they are pre-spaced and arranged between two very thin layers of biodegradable fibres. This process is very practical, easy to implement, and avoids tedious thinning.

Lamb's Lettuce, also known as Corn Salad, is a small salad plant with rounded leaves grouped in rosettes. It is THE small salad leaf for autumn and winter, although some varieties called "all-season" can be sown and harvested throughout the year. Varieties with large seeds have larger leaves but are less resistant to cold than those with small seeds.

Lamb's Lettuce belongs to the family of Caprifoliaceae (like Honeysuckle) and grows wild throughout Europe, to the point that it is sometimes called a "weed".

This small salad is mainly consumed raw, alone or accompanied, for example with kiwi, avocado or beetroot, but can also be cooked, like spinach. Its nutritional value is remarkable, it is low in calories but particularly rich in vitamin C (three times more than Lettuce), vitamin E, and beta-carotene.

Growing lettuce is easy, but the sowing must be done in firm soil and it is important to ensure that the soil remains moist.

Harvest: Lamb's Lettuce is harvested as needed by cutting the rosette just above the collar with a knife.

Storage: It can be stored for a few days in the vegetable compartment of the refrigerator.

Gardener's Tip: If you belong to the category of gardeners who tolerate a little disorder, even in the vegetable garden, do not hesitate to let some rosettes go to seed in spring. They will self-seed and provide you with some greenery on your plate without any cost or effort!

Planting and care

Sowing:

The germination of Lamb's Lettuce occurs at a temperature of approximately 14°C. Shoots appear after about 10 days.

Sowing is done from August to October for a harvest from September to March.

On firm soil that has been raked but not dug, draw furrows spaced 15 to 20 cm (6 to 8in) apart, with a depth of one centimetre. Place the tape of seeds and cover it with fine soil or a little compost, and firm with the flat of the rake. Apply the first watering and keep the soil moist during the emergence period. Lamb's Lettuce is preferably sown in shade or partial shade. If this is not possible, cover your sowing with a light mulch e.g. a very thin layer of grass, to maintain good moisture until the arrival of autumn rains.

Cultivation:

Lamb's Lettuce is not demanding and does not require any prior fertilisation. Varieties intended for winter crops are hardy but only to a certain point. During severe winters, remember to protect them from extreme cold by covering them with a winter fleece or a layer of straw.

It is a salad that grows very well in a cold greenhouse or under a forcing tunnel.

In terms of companion planting, Lamb's Lettuce is a good neighbour. You can sow it at the base of many vegetables and plant it between rows of Endive, Spinach, Radishes, etc.
