Description

Cultivated rocket is a very aromatic vegetable plant that is easy to grow. Halfway between a salad and a condiment, its leaves exude a pronounced flavour. Its growth is fast and it can be harvested all year round if protected from the cold. Sowing from March to August

Its tender leaves with a powerful flavour are used in salads, either alone or mixed (mesclun), and they add fragrance to Italian dishes such as lasagna and pizza. It is a plant rich in vitamin C and iron.

Cultivated rocket is not demanding, it ideally grows in humus-rich, moist, and well-draining soil, but it also tolerates ordinary soils very well.

Harvest: It is recommended to spread out the sowings to have a supply over a long period. It is simply cut at ground level.

Storage: Rocket leaves can be stored in the refrigerator for a few days. To fully enjoy its aroma, we recommend consuming it freshly picked.

A gardener's tip: Flea beetles, tiny beetles, are fond of rocket leaves and meticulously puncture them in dry and hot weather. While spraying tansy infusion can limit the damage, installing insect-proof netting from sowing is the most effective method of control while avoiding the use of insecticide, which, even of natural origin, has consequences on the garden's balance.

Planting and care

Sowing:

The germination temperature of cultivated Rocket is around 12°C (53.6°F) and takes about 15 days.

Sowing period: from March to August

Harvest period: all year round if protected from cold in regions with harsh winters

In properly amended and loosened soil, sow the seeds to a depth of about 1cm, with rows spaced 45 cm (18in) apart. When the plants are well developed, thin them out, leaving one plant every 25 cm (10in). Late summer sowings will produce throughout the winter if protected by a frame or winter cover.

Cultivation:

Rocket thrives in full sun (early summer) or partial shade (mid-summer), ideally in humus-rich, moist, and well-draining soil.

If compost is needed, it should be applied preferably in autumn, in the form of well-rotted compost by raking it to a depth of 5 cm (2in), after having adequately loosened the soil, as is the case for all vegetable crops.

This is a plant that tends to bolt easily (except for some particularly resistant varieties to this phenomenon), so remember to water regularly and mulch the soil to maintain good moisture. It is also advisable to stagger sowings to extend the harvesting period.
