Description

The Pierre Bénite Batavia Lettuce is a vigorous, tender, and crunchy variety. It forms a large, firm, and heavy head with curly and blistered green-blond leaves. It is a lettuce for all seasons, resistant to heat and slow to bolt. Sow from February to July for a harvest from May to October.

If Lettuce is one of the most popular vegetables (4.2 kilograms per person per year), it is appreciated for its freshness, crunchiness, as well as its taste and nutritional qualities. It can be consumed raw in salads, but also cooked, for example, to accompany peas.
As the ultimate leaf vegetable, Lettuce is an annual plant that belongs to the large family of Asteraceae. Its Latin name, Lactuca sativa, refers both to the white sap (lactuca) that oozes when cut and to the fact that it is cultivated (sativa).
It is an essential vegetable in any respectable vegetable garden, and there are so many varieties that it can be grown almost year-round. Lettuce cultivation is easy as long as you follow the cultivation calendar for each variety. It grows quickly and thrives in any soil, as long as it is rich and remains moist.

Harvest: It is simply done with a knife when it reaches maturity.

Storage: Lettuce can be stored for a few days in the refrigerator, but to enjoy its freshness to the fullest, we recommend consuming it immediately after harvesting.

Gardener's tip: During hot summer temperatures, lettuces exposed to direct sunlight tend to wilt. To prevent this phenomenon, consider protecting them from intense rays using overturned crates. In our garden, summer lettuces are not grown in rows but interspersed throughout: at the base of climbing beans, in the middle of cucumbers and squash, whose foliage provides beneficial shade.

Planting and care

Sowing: Lettuce germinates at a temperature of around 18°C (64.4°F) and takes an average of 8 days.

Sowing is done from February to August for a harvest from May to November.
On well-prepared and loosened soil, make furrows spaced 40 cm (16in) apart, with a depth of 0.5 cm (0in). Sow in rows, spacing the seeds 4 cm (2in) apart and cover. After germination, when the plants are well developed, thin them out to leave one plant every 40 cm (16in).

If your vegetable garden is often targeted by slugs and snails, we recommend sowing under cover, in small pots, and transferring the plants to the garden when they are well developed.

Cultivation: Lettuce is not a very demanding vegetable, but it does require humus-rich soil, otherwise it tends to bolt prematurely. It is advisable to apply a moderate amount of mature compost in autumn, by scratching it into the soil to a depth of 5 cm (2in), after loosening the soil as is done for any vegetable cultivation. It prefers slightly acidic to neutral soils (pH between 5.5 and 7.5).

During cultivation, remember that lettuce prefers moist soil, so consider mulching around the plants. Lettuce is a good companion plant, as it can easily be intercropped with slower-growing vegetables such as beans, tomatoes, cucumbers, etc. Just avoid planting it next to corn.
