Description
Begonia boliviensis Bossa Nova® Mix brings together several compact forms of Bolivian begonia, with a trailing habit and variously coloured flowers. Offered as coated seeds, this tuberous begonia, once reserved for experienced gardeners, is now accessible to all. The plants flower continuously throughout the summer; they look superb in hanging baskets, window boxes and large bowls. Begonias are grown as an annual, but can be kept as tuberous perennial if overwintered frost-free.
Botanically speaking, the Bolivian begonia belongs to the Begoniaceae family. The type species, Begonia boliviensis, also known as the Bolivian tuberous begonia or Andean begonia, is a tender tuberous perennial. It is native to the Bolivian Andes and north-western Argentina, where it colonises damp rocky walls, banks and mountain stream sides, in a cool, often misty climate, at medium to high altitude.
The Bossa Nova® Mix is an F1 hybrid. The Bossa Nova® series was developed by the English breeder Floranova in the early 2010s, to offer a seed-raised version, highly branched and floriferous, as an alternative to tuberous begonias propagated by cuttings. The mix brings together several solid colours from the series (red, orange, pink, yellow, white), all with green foliage.
Each plant forms a bushy then trailing clump, 30 to 40cm tall and 40 to 50cm wide, sometimes more in a hanging basket, where the stems can trail to 50–60cm. The leaves are narrow, asymmetrical, lanceolate to triangular with a very oblique base and finely toothed margins. They measure 6 to 10cm long and are medium green to blue-green. The foliage is deciduous: the above-ground part disappears when the tuber is dormant.
It flowers in clusters that arise all along the stems, in the leaf axils. Each bears numerous pendulous, 5 to 6 cm long flowers with four elongated, tapering tepals. In this Bossa Nova Mix, the colours cover a wide range of reds and oranges, yellows, pinks and pure white. Flowering begins in late May or June, depending on the sowing date, and continues without interruption until October.
In the garden or on the terrace, Begonia boliviensis Bossa Nova® Mix excels in large containers and other hanging baskets, where its trailing habit works well. A bright partial shade position is ideal, but Bossa Nova begonias also tolerate gentle sun if the soil remains moist. The chartreuse green of Ipomoea 'Sweet Caroline Light Green' beautifully highlights their warm tones, while Bacopa 'Snowtopia White' brings a cloud of small white flowers. For slightly shadier spots, consider the trailing Fuchsia 'Blue Angel' and Heuchera 'Marmalade' with its coppery foliage.

Planting and care
Sow your Bossa Nova Mix Bolivian begonia seeds from January to March in a seed tray.
Use a good quality potting compost, sieved over the surface to ensure good contact between the seed and its substrate. Before sowing, firm the compost lightly with a presser board and moisten it slightly. Sow your seeds carefully. Do not cover the seeds. Water with a very fine spray or a small hand mister. Place your seed tray in the light, out of direct sunlight, at a temperature of 24°C to 27°C.
Germination will take 15 to 30 days. As soon as the young plants are manageable, transplant them into 7cm pots. Keep the compost moist but not waterlogged. Then, 15 days before planting out in their final position, begin to acclimatise them gradually to a temperature of 15°C.
From the end of May to the beginning of June, the temperature in the garden will be warm enough for your young plants. Choose a slightly shaded spot. Add a good trowel of compost to each planting hole. Space your plants 40cm apart.
Regularly remove faded flowers to maintain their beauty and encourage new blooms.
In autumn, bring the pots indoors and allow the foliage to dry off, then lift the tubers from the soil, brush them clean and store them in a dry place until the following spring, when they can be replanted in pots.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
