Description
Campanula glomerata 'Superba', or Campanula 'Superba', is a very popular perennial plant in gardens with its beautiful clusters of intense bluish-purple flowers. An excellent plant for borders in cottage gardens, it performs very well in flower beds. It is a robust and hardy plant that can withstand temperatures as low as -15°C. Also, pick it for fresh bouquets.
Campanula glomerata, from the Campanulaceae family, originates from temperate zones in Europe and Asia. This cultivar, 'Superba', stands out for its compact and upright habit, forming a dense tuft. Its stems bear green, lanceolate and slightly hairy leaves. The 10 to 12 cm long basal leaves, are often heart-shaped, while the leaves on the stems are smaller and narrower.
The straight stems are about 50-60 cm tall and carry bell-shaped, deep purple flower clusters in summer, 2 to 3 cm in diameter. Flowering mainly occurs from June to July, but it can extend into September-October if faded flowers are removed after the first wave of blooms. This cultivar has moderate growth and spreads easily via rhizomes, creating a dense carpet over the years. The flowers of Campanula glomerata 'Superba' attract pollinators like butterflies and bees. This flowering is followed by the formation of fruits, called capsules, containing numerous small seeds that readily self-sow in the garden.
Campanula glomerata 'Superba' is perfect for perennial beds, borders, or cottage gardens. It pairs wonderfully with plants with yellow or white blooms for a strong contrast. Pair it, for example, with Delphinium 'Magic Fountain Mix', purple foxglove, Perennial Geranium 'Patricia', or even 'Coronation Gold' Yarrow. Together, these plants create an appealing colour palette. For amateur flower arrangers, this campanula is an excellent choice.

Planting and care
Sowing of Campanula glomerata 'Superba'. For optimal germination, sow the seeds indoors, in trays or pots, at the end of winter or early spring. Use a light and well-drained soil. Sow the seeds on the surface of the substrate without covering them, as they require light to germinate. Maintain a temperature of 15-20°C and keep the substrate slightly moist. Germination takes about 2 to 4 weeks. Once the young plants are large enough, transplant them into individual pots. Wait until the last frosts have passed before planting them in the ground.
Cultivation:
Plant Campanula glomerata 'Superba' in full sun or partial shade, in well-drained soil, slightly acidic to limestone (pH between 6 and 8). It thrives particularly well in humus-rich soils and requires regular watering, especially in dry periods, without letting the soil become waterlogged. During the flowering period, remove faded flowers to encourage new flowering. This plant is hardy down to -20°C (USDA zone 3-8) and tolerates cold climates well, but it needs protection against excessive moisture in winter. Divide the clumps every 3 to 5 years to maintain their vigour and control their spread, as this campanula can become invasive if conditions are suitable.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
The flowering period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Netherlands, etc.)
It will vary according to where you live:- In zones 9 to 10 (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), flowering will occur about 2 to 4 weeks earlier.
- In zones 6 to 7 (Germany, Poland, Slovenia, and lower mountainous regions), flowering will be delayed by 2 to 3 weeks.
- In zone 5 (Central Europe, Scandinavia), blooming will be delayed by 3 to 5 weeks.
In temperate climates, pruning of spring-flowering shrubs (forsythia, spireas, etc.) should be done just after flowering.
Pruning of summer-flowering shrubs (Indian Lilac, Perovskia, etc.) can be done in winter or spring.
In cold regions as well as with frost-sensitive plants, avoid pruning too early when severe frosts may still occur.
The planting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions located in USDA zone 8 (France, United Kingdom, Ireland, Netherlands).
It will vary according to where you live:
- In Mediterranean zones (Marseille, Madrid, Milan, etc.), autumn and winter are the best planting periods.
- In continental zones (Strasbourg, Munich, Vienna, etc.), delay planting by 2 to 3 weeks in spring and bring it forward by 2 to 4 weeks in autumn.
- In mountainous regions (the Alps, Pyrenees, Carpathians, etc.), it is best to plant in late spring (May-June) or late summer (August-September).
The harvesting period indicated on our website applies to countries and regions in USDA zone 8 (France, England, Ireland, the Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...) fruit and vegetable harvests are likely to be delayed by 3-4 weeks.
In warmer areas (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), harvesting will probably take place earlier, depending on weather conditions.
The sowing periods indicated on our website apply to countries and regions within USDA Zone 8 (France, UK, Ireland, Netherlands).
In colder areas (Scandinavia, Poland, Austria...), delay any outdoor sowing by 3-4 weeks, or sow under glass.
In warmer climes (Italy, Spain, Greece, etc.), bring outdoor sowing forward by a few weeks.
