Description

The Cosmos Double Click Cranberries is a variety of tall cosmos that offers large semi-double flowers in a lovely cranberry pink-red. These fast-growing annuals bloom for several weeks in summer and autumn, requiring minimal maintenance. This variety, which would not have been disowned by the impressionists, is suitable for the back of borders, flower gardens, or English gardens. Stunning in bouquets.

The Double Click cosmos series comes in several colors. All plants in this selection are floriferous and produce mostly fully double flowers that attract bees and butterflies. They are derived from an annual species native to Mexico and the extreme southern United States, Cosmos bipinnatus. A less hardy annual plant, related to Dahlias, this species belongs to the Asteraceae family and has a characteristic inflorescence in the form of a head and particularly fine foliage, which is described as compound, resembling that of fennel. The 'Double Click Cranberries' cultivar quickly forms clumps reaching 80-90 cm (31.5 - 35.4 in) in height, and 50 cm (19.7 in) in width. Flowering begins in June-July, 60 to 90 days after sowing, and lasts until October, only ceasing with the first frosts. The heads measure from 5 to 7 cm in diameter and are composed of several crowns of crumpled pink-red petals. The center of the head is a golden disk composed of tiny fertile florets. It attracts and feeds many insects and butterflies, including the Monarch. The foliage is finely divided into thread-like segments, barely 0.5 to 1 mm wide, and has a slight and pleasant fragrance. After flowering, the plant produces spindle-shaped, more or less bristly, blackish achenes.

Able to fill a border on its own, the Cosmos Double Click Cranberries offers an abundance of elegant flowers with a rustic charm. Cosmos flowers are ideal for beginners, almost impossible to fail. Their flowering is foolproof: poor soil, heat, humidity... Give them sunlight and they will bloom no matter what. The Double Click selection is a tall plant that brings verticality to borders and lightness to the heavier flowering of perennials. During flowering, the plant may collapse under its weight due to wind or rain showers. This problem can be solved by grouping the plants so that the leaves intertwine. It is used in rustic borders, mixed with grasses like Stipa tenuifolia, with Buenos Aires verbena and Nigelles, or among perennials that love the sun as much as it does, such as bidens and rudbeckias. Its fascinating flowers have excellent vase life.

Planting and care

Sow Cosmos Double Click seeds from March to May, at a depth of 3 mm (0.1 in), in fine compost and cover the seeds with a very fine pinch of vermiculite. Place the seed tray in a mini-greenhouse at a temperature of 18-25 ° C or wrap it in a polyethylene bag. Keep the soil moist, but not waterlogged. Light promotes germination, which occurs 7 to 15 days after sowing. When the seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant them into individual pots measuring 7 cm (2.8 in) in diameter. Grow them in cooler conditions until the plants are sufficiently developed to be planted outside. When all risk of frost has passed, gradually acclimatize the plants to outdoor conditions for 7 to 10 days.

Plant them in full sun, in moist, well-drained soil, spaced 45 cm (17.7 in) apart. Pinch the tips of the shoots on each stem, during transplantation, to encourage branching of the stems and the production of numerous flowers. Cosmos prefer a soil pH between 6 and 8.5, corresponding to the soil of their original habitat, the alkaline regions of Central America. They prefer full sun but tolerate partial shade. These plants are drought-tolerant once established, they are not very susceptible to diseases but can be targeted by aphids. Spontaneous seedlings are common but not always true, without becoming invasive.
