Mimulus Medius Pastel Crimson F1 seeds - Monkey flower

Mimulus Medius F1 Pastel Crimson is a compact monkey flower from the Medius F1 series, selected for its large flowers and generous flowering in partial shade. Its soft carmine-red corollas adorn pots and cool borders from late spring until the first frosts. This variety thrives in cool, moist conditions: it is particularly well-suited to slightly shaded spots in the garden and sheltered containers.

Mimulus Medius F1 Pastel Crimson belongs to the Phrymaceae family and the horticultural group of Mimulus × hybridus (syn. Erythranthe × hybrida). These hybrid monkey flowers descend from South American species found on riverbanks and in damp meadows. In our temperate climates, 'Pastel Crimson' is grown as an annual as it does not tolerate cold.
This cultivar is part of the Medius F1 series, selected by the Czech seed company Černý Seed for its low, well-branched habit, rapid flowering, and large flowers. 'Pastel Crimson' stands out with its very soft carmine-red colour, brightened by a golden-yellow throat, highly uniform from one plant to another. Within a few weeks, the plant forms a rounded, dense clump, 20 to 25cm tall and wide. The green, supple stems branch from the base and bear opposite, bright green foliage. The leaves are oval and sometimes slightly toothed, fairly tender. The flowers appear continuously at the tips of the stems or short shoots. Each 5 to 5.5cm wide corolla, consists of a tube ending in two lips: one upper lip slightly upright, the other broader and trailing. Flowering extends from June to September, or even until the first frosts if the soil remains damp. The nectar-rich flowers attract bees and other insects.

Plant Mimulus Medius F1 Pastel Crimson at the front of borders that are always slightly damp, at the edge of ponds, in shaded rockeries, or in large pots on a balcony sheltered from scorching sun. It thrives in containers in partial shade, alongside dark or bluish foliage. It can be paired with the purple cushions of Heuchera ‘Forever Purple’, the small blue-grey clumps of Hosta ‘Blue Mouse Ears’ or the orange cascades of Begonia boliviensis ‘Summerwings Apricot’. To vary colour effects, other monkey flowers can also be planted nearby, such as Mimulus x hybridus Mystic Mixed F1 Hybrid.
