Description

The California Poppy 'Peach Sorbet', known by its Latin name Eschscholzia californica, is a hardy annual plant, very easy to grow, with crumpled, double to semi-double flowering that abundantly renews from June to September. The color of its flowers can be described as a succession of cream, pink, and peach shades.

(Peach Sorbet translates to peach sorbet)

The California Poppy gets its common names from the resemblance of its fully bloomed flowers to those of its cousins, Poppies and Corn Poppies, as well as its Western American origin. Its melliferous flowers will attract bees and hoverflies to your garden, an undeniable ecological asset. This California Corn Poppy bears graceful, slightly crumpled "paper flowers" that will perfectly blend in a pastel-colored flower bed.

Picking its flowers will allow you to create tender, short-lived bouquets with vibrant colors.

Due to its small size (30 cm (11.8 in) tall by 25 cm (9.8 in) wide), the California Poppy is commonly used at the front of flower beds, in rockeries, or in pots on the terrace. It easily self-seeds and forms beautiful, naturally-looking flower beds year after year.

It tolerates all types of soils, even dry and poor ones, but it prefers light soils over heavy ones. A full sun exposure will promote its flowering.

Planting and care

Sow California poppy from March to May, directly in place in rows spaced 15cm apart (5.9 in). Cover the seeds with 1cm (0.4 in) of fine soil and water regularly. The seeds will germinate between 5 to 10 days. When the young plants are strong enough, you can thin out your sowing by transplanting some seedlings 15cm (5.9 in) apart from each other. Repeat your sowings every 15 days from March to May in order to have a regular and abundant flowering from June to September. By sowing under cover in February at 15-20°C, you can obtain young plants ready to be transplanted after the frost and have a first flowering as early as May.
