Description

The organic Zinnia elegans 'Lilliput Mix' is a variety with pompom flowers in a mix of vibrant colours: red, pink, orange, yellow, and white. This annual plant of medium size produces numerous flowers in shimmering colours from July to the first frost. The inflorescences are round and robust, carried by stiff stems. They are nectar-rich and make excellent cut flowers. Sow indoors in March-April or directly in the ground in May.

The organic Zinnia elegans 'Lilliput Mix' belongs to the large family of Asteraceae. The plant quickly forms a clump 50 to 60 cm tall and 25 cm wide. Its stiff and well-branched stems bear large, rounded and pointed pale green leaves. This elegant Zinnia gets its name from the small size of its flowers (3 to 4 cm in diameter). The terminal and solitary flowers are compound heads made up of florets with wide petals forming pretty hemispherical pompoms. The non-fragrant flowers attract butterflies that come to feed on their nectar.

Zinnia prefers a warm and sunny location. Its water needs are quite low, and it will thrive in well-drained soil. Zinnia elegans 'Lilliput Mix' has a bushy habit, making it ideal for use as a border plant, just behind low-growing plants. It can also be planted in containers on the terrace. Combine it in your borders with Marigolds, African Daisies, Ageratum, and Red Sages. These Pompon Zinnias, with their stiff stems, have excellent vase life and can be used to create colourful summer bouquets.

Planting and care

Sow Zinnia:

  • In March-April, under heated shelter to obtain young plants to transplant in May. The ideal growing temperature is 22°C. It takes about 14 days for the young shoots to appear. The seeds should be germinated in darkness, so make sure to cover them with one centimeter of potting soil when sowing.
  • In May, directly in the garden in a warm and sunny spot. Transplant the young plants at a distance of 30 cm in your flower beds.

Oidium (a fungus visible as a white powder on the foliage) can sometimes stain the leaves and disrupt the plant's growth.

Removing faded flowers will promote the renewal of flowering.
