Description

The dwarf Zinnia 'Pépito Extra Mix' enhances flowerbeds, the front of borders or planters with a generous, vibrantly coloured flowering. The double pom-pom flowers form small balls in a mix of red, yellow, pink, orange, purple and white. This modest-sized annual flowers generously from July until the first frosts, on stiff stems. Sow under cover in March-April or directly in position in May.

Zinnia elegans Pépito Extra Mix belongs to the large Asteraceae family. The plant quickly forms a clump 30 cm high and 25 cm wide. Its rigid, well-branched stems bear broad, rounded and pointed pale green leaves. The terminal and solitary flowers are compound heads composed of florets with wide petals forming pretty hemispherical pom-poms. The unscented flowers still attract butterflies, which come to sip their nectar.

Zinnia enjoys warm and sunny exposures, is fairly drought-tolerant and thrives in well-drained soil. The Pépito Extra Mix variety forms a small bush, ideal for occupying the front of borders or for embellishing a planter on a terrace. In your borders, pair it with Marigolds, African Marigolds, Ageratum and red sages. Its pom-pom-shaped flowers, borne on rigid stems, offer excellent vase life, perfect for composing pretty colourful summer bouquets.

Planting and care

Sowing Zinnia 'Pepito Extra Mix':

  • In March-April, under heated cover to obtain young plants for transplanting in May. The ideal growing temperature is 22°C. It takes 14 days to see the young shoots appear. Seeds germinate in darkness, so ensure you cover the seeds with one centimetre of compost at sowing time.
  • In May, directly in the garden in a warm and sunny spot. Transplant the young plants 30 cm apart in your flower beds.

Powdery mildew (a fungus visible as a white powder on the leaf surface) may sometimes stain the leaves and disrupt the plant's growth.

Removing faded flowers will encourage renewed flowering.
