Description

Isotoma 'Patti's Pink' is the latest born of a new line of Isotoma with large bright flowers, even more decorative and more heat-resistant. This beautiful novelty is adorned with star-shaped flowers with a brilliant violet-pink colour, punctuated with a yellow eye. Almost three times larger than those of classic species, they are also particularly rich in nectar. Perennial grown as an annual in our climates, this infinitely graceful little plant forms a cushion adorned with very finely cut foliage and blooms until autumn. Install it along the edge of a flowerbed or in hanging baskets and containers on the terrace, and let the charm work.

Originally from Australia, Isotoma axillaris is a herbaceous perennial plant with woody base and very rapid growth, often cultivated as an annual due to its lack of hardiness, but also for its long and abundant flowering. It belongs to the family of Campanulaceae. The 'Patti's Pink' variety has recently been selected for the size of its flowers and its ease of cultivation, even in hot climates. It quickly forms a well-branched, naturally compact and beautifully rounded clump, measuring 25 to 30cm (10 to 12in) in all directions. Its narrow, tapered, finely cut and toothed evergreen leaves are dark green. Between July and October, and even until the first frost, its countless 5-pointed flowers with tapered tips, arranged in a 3.5cm (1in) diameter star, follow one another. They are slightly fragrant and highly visited by pollinating insects. This plant withstands heat and drought well, but will be more floriferous in fertile and moist soil.

Isotoma 'Patti's Pink' is an easy-to-grow and highly floriferous plant, interesting for its light texture and heat resistance. Decorative with its brilliant violet flowering, it can be used in flowerbeds among other plants, in mass plantings along borders, and of course in pots, hanging baskets, and containers. It harmonizes well with a wide variety of other annual or perennial plants such as begonias, petunias, Bacopas, Nemesias, pink Gypsophilas, or with geraniums, for example, which it lightens the silhouette of. It is a beautiful rockery plant, which can be combined, for example, with Osteospermums, poppies, dahlias, or even with roses in shades of orange, pink, or white.

Note: Attention, our young plug plants are professional products reserved for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transplant and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14C° for a few weeks before being installed outdoors once the risk of frost is definitively eliminated.

Planting and care

Isotoma requires very little maintenance and thrives in a sunny exposure. Plant it in the garden after the last frost. Ensure that the plant does not lack water and remove faded flowers from time to time. Although it is water-efficient, it will be more floriferous and beautiful when planted in soil that remains slightly moist. In very mild climates, it can be perennial, but it is recommended to overwinter the plant if you want to keep it from year to year. Repot it and keep it in a conservatory or cold greenhouse during winter. Attention: the sap of this plant can be irritating to certain individuals. Slugs and snails enjoy its foliage: make sure to protect your young plants in spring.
