Description

Lobelia 'Hot Water Blue' is a hybrid variety with rapid and vigorous growth, allowing it to quickly form a ramified clump submerged in abundant sky blue flowering that nothing can stop. This excellent annual is a recent creation that retains its beauty even in the height of summer and continues to flower until the first frost. Its ball-shaped habit adapts particularly well to hanging baskets and balcony planters. An easy-to-grow variety that will not disappoint, it is essential in summer compositions.

Lobelia 'Hot Water Blue' is a plant from the Campanulaceae family of horticultural origin. It is derived, among others, from Lobelia erinus, a South African annual species, an essential for container gardening. The numerous slender and ramified stems of the 'Hot Water Blue' variety form a minimum height and width of 30 cm (12in), confidently filling hanging baskets and integrating among taller summer plants. Its small alternate, obovate and slightly crenate leaves provide a background for the multitude of flowers that bloom throughout the summer. As they elongate, the flower spikes bear clustered flowers. Their corollas measure 2 cm (1in) in width and 1.8 cm (1in) in height and are composed of 2 very delicate petals in the upper part and 3 larger petals in the lower part. They are regularly visited by pollinating insects.

Lobelia 'Hot Water Blue' finds its place alone, in pots, illuminating every corner of courtyards and terraces. It blends in with the pastel shades of romantic compositions, harmonising with the softness of petunias, the silvery foliage of Helichrysum, and the whiteness of Verbena. Its light blue shade also pleasantly contrasts with the pale yellow of Vanilla Marigolds or Million Bells Lemon Petunias, especially since its exuberant growth will not be overshadowed by its more cumbersome neighbours. You can even plant it at the edge of a flowerbed, especially if you have a small garden, preferably in a sunny (not scorching) spot, but also in partial shade. The enchanting spectacle of its flowering never tires; this little plant will always find a place near the house.

Note: Please be aware that our plug plants are professional products intended for experienced gardeners. Upon receipt, repot and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame) at a temperature above 14°C (57.2°F) for a few weeks before planting them outdoors once the risk of frost has passed.

Planting and care

The 'Hot Water Blue' lobelia is a tender plant, so plant it outside once the risk of frost has passed. Choose a sunny or partially shaded location. Annual lobelia prefers a well-drained, light, moist, and humus-rich soil. Water regularly and add fertiliser to the watering can every two weeks. After each flowering period, lightly prune the stems to stimulate new flowering. You can also take cuttings at this time.

The 'Hot' series lobelia varieties tolerate heat and full sun better than classic varieties, but they still need a moist soil. You can plant them from April, as they can withstand temperatures close to freezing, which causes their leaves to darken. Leave at least 40cm (16in) spacing between each plant when planting them in the ground.
