The tayberry, a natural hybrid between the blackberry and the raspberry, is one of the best soft fruits for the garden. These fruit plants combine the tangy flavour of raspberry with the rich aroma of blackberry. They produce long, conical, red to purple, very fragrant fruits, to be enjoyed fresh or in jam.

The most well-known variety is Buckingham® Tayberry, vigorous and productive and thornless, with elongated, dark red fruits in early summer. It is distinguished by its sweet and slightly acidic flesh, pleasant in the mouth. The 'Loganberry' is slightly later, producing rounder fruits, black when ripe and with a more tangy flavour. It forms flexible stems, often without thorns. 'Boysenberry' is characterised by its very large fruits, purplish black when ripe, with a complex taste, close to that of the wild blackberry.

Tayberries like a fertile, moist, but well-drained soil, slightly acidic to neutral. Place them in a sunny position to promote good fruiting. Train the stems on a sturdy support. Water regularly in summer, especially during fruit formation. Prune the canes that have fruited at the end of summer.
