Description

This ancient vine was planted between 1935 and 1940. It is over 70 years old.

Of the 'Altesse Seyssel' grape variety, also known as 'Rousette', it was planted on the well-exposed hillsides of the upper Rhone Valley, on the borders of Ain and Savoie, in the hamlet of Corbonod.

Originating from the Louis Griot vineyard, recognised as a producer of one of the best white wines from Savoie, the famous Rousette with fruity aromas, this vine was repotted in large 50-litre containers in 2010.

Regularly pruned and maintained, these old, nodose and ramified vines with two or three large branches are very decorative and highlight the young, tender green shoots in spring.

Still vigorous, they continue to produce, in smaller quantities, a white grape with golden reflections, juicy and sweet, which can be consumed at the table or vinified.

In autumn, its deciduous leaves take on reddish tones. The leaves of this champion Vitis vinifera are diamond-shaped, 20 cm (8in) long and heart-shaped. It is hardy and can withstand temperatures as low as -20°C (-4°F).

Planted in the sun, it will be very decorative along a wall, in open ground or in a large container on a terrace.

Planting and care

The Rousette Vine should be planted in ordinary, well-drained soil, either neutral or calcareous, preferably moist, which you will have enriched with an organic fertiliser. Choose a full sun exposure, possibly partial shade in the south. It can withstand temperatures as low as -20°C (-4°F). Prune it vigorously in February by severely cutting it back. Prune it again in June, but more lightly, to ensure good fruiting. Every year remove the branches that have produced fruits. Stake or train to support and guide the branches. Train it against a wall in full sun to benefit directly from the grapes. Powdery mildew and downy mildew are very common, which is why the vine should be treated annually as a precaution. This ancient vine may take a season to establish itself properly, during which it will grow moderately. Its woody climbing stems will then gain several metres per year and will require pruning. Still vigorous, it can, under good conditions, fruit - albeit in a reduced manner - for several decades.
